  • Catch Can Group Buy FEELER

Would there be any interest in a Catch Can group buy?

If you don't already know, on the TDI and 1.8T (and maybe VR6 I don't know) oil ends up in the intake system. It gets in your intercooler. It gets in all your pipes. It gets into the engine as oil vapour and burns. Over time it reduces intercooler efficiency and clogs your cat. And other bad things.

The simple solution is to connect a catch can. They are not that expensive. They also look nice if they are polished. It would be nice to find a good looking, small one that is easy to mount and has a breather filter on it.

I was thinking we could group buy a bunch of them and do a fun mod-day and install everybody's catch cans. I would bring cola for everyone.

    Perhaps through EUTuning.... hint hint.

This is just a FEELER but if you are interested in a catch can this spring, please post up! Or if you have any ideas what catch cans you would like... ATP makes a nice one for example.

I would GUESS That the price would be between $50-$100 canadian depending on how nice of a catch can you guys want.

One hose comes off the valve cover, into the can. This is the hose that normally goes to a stock crappy PCV valve and then into your intake post-MAF. The can filters and seperates out any oil or oil vapour. The other hose goes off the can back into the PCV system which routes air back to the intake. Free of oil and sludge.

You need to empty the can out maybe once or twice a year. This is a peace of mind mod. Every time you empty oil out of the can you will KNOW that was oil that would have ended up being sucked through your air system. If you find that you do this mod and the can stays empty (provided its a quality product) you can just assume that your stock PCV valve is doing a good job and that you have no danger of oil ending up in your intercooler.

You can buy hand held powder coaters for about $150 and you just bake the item in the oven afterwards. I found them in an auotbody mag that Frasier at Rudy's gave to me. They look pretty easy but I am not sure how well they work.

Supposedly this will wreck your oven. You'd need to pick up a 2nd hand oven from like the bargain finder or something. I am sure you can get one really cheap anyhow.

So far 3 people have expressed interest... this is getting off topic so lets limit the powdercoating discussion or start a new thread I would say we need a minimum of 5 and up to 10 people to make a real group buy happen.

is there much use for these for the 2.0L?

                            Pics to generate interest.

Not sure about 2.0L or VR6 applications, they are most helpful in FI scenarios like in the TDI. However, may still be useful for keeping oil vapour out of your cylinders to prevent carbon build up etc if your engine has a PCV valve that recirculates air back into the intake.
