Earlier today I got a call from Dave, letting me know that the loud whistle coming from my car was the wailing of a dying turbo. I just got a call from Blair at SCFC (very nice guy) and he confirmed what Dave said. This is on a stock engine with only 35k!! They've started disassembling it and I should have my car back with a new turbo tomorrow. I guess getting a new turbo is a good thing, but at the same time I'm a bit disconcerted about it going so early. Oh well, thank goodness for warranties!

Re: Turbos blowing left and right
Thanks Dave, I appreciate the care you put into it. I'm sure the Jetta and Golf will make beautiful music together.
I'm still amazed that my turbo needs replacing at such a young age. I suppose I'm glad that the problem is centralized in one place (albeit one very important place) rather than being one of those things that are foreverr a mystery. Will you be replacing those side guards as well? Cheers.Yuval

Originally posted by KorI suspected that might be the problem, glad you got to it before any trouble happened. When turbos go often the engine needs a rebuild. Too bad they can't order you a K04 insteadYuval

Originally posted by uv23Yep very very glad it got caught while the car was still under warranty. I wonder if a new turbo might also alleviate some of the surging issues I've always had, where it seems like the power just cuts out for a moment then comes back in.
If you don't have a boost gauge I think its too dangerous to fiddle with boost.KR

Re: Turbos blowing left and right
I don't usually drive so hard that I'd need to let it cool, but when I do giv'er I usually have a few blocks where I have no choice but to slow down before parking. The car's always been loud (though it has been getting steadily louder) so maybe it was just a bum turbo to begin with.Yuval

Re: Turbos blowing left and right
Well the turbo is out. Boy are my arms sore! The person who engineered the oil and coolant lines going behind the turbo needs a kick in the junk! I will call it a day and slide the new one in tomorrow. The bearing was a rough on the impeller shaft. Hopefully this cures the noise. Oh well we will see tomorrow.
