The very first post in this thread shows exactly why I think there is some tension between club vee dub and new vee dub.
"one car is faster/nicer" (referring to MK4 VWs).
Many people do not feel that a newer car is necessarily a nicer car, myself included. I just purchased a new vehicle a month or so ago, and am so unimpressed with the MK4s that I went outside VW to purchase a new car.
I am a diehard fan of MK1 VWs, and feel that they are nicer than any mk4, despite their lower value.
As far as faster, there are many Mk1 / MK2 / MK3 vehicles on Calgary streets that have no trouble blowing the door off MK4s.
Just my thoughts.
Curtis
I didn't see anybody claming that MKIV's are better than MKI II or III. In fact the only person to claim that any one is better than the other so far is you. Maybe everyone needs to shut the hell up and stop making it a competition.
On that note, the reason I post more here instead of on the CVD board is because the crowd over here seems to be a little younger, while the CVD crowd seems to be a little older and more family oriented.
EDIT: I am not a member of either club, so my 2 cents only refers to the Message Boards.

There are plenty of mustangs and civic's that are blowing the doors of Mk1/2/3's as well, its all preference. I dont think anyone here thinks their cars are "nicer" because they are newer.

Ok, I vowed I wasn't going to post in this thread but....
I don't think "Tension" would be the right word for me, I have nothing against anyone in the club, I don't think they are Jerks and I CERTAINLY don't think their cars aren't as nice. I used to be a member (yes paid), I paid at my first meet, not for the discounts just because I had my second VW and was so stoked (Corrado) to actually find a CLUB that was Volkswagen oriented. I went to a couple meetings but could NOT get anyone to talk to me (I don't think I'm THAT annoying, haha), I tried talking to a guy with the same car as me in hopes of learning more about my car...nothing, in fact I got dissed for not "knowing" enough about it, then I tried just joining in on a group of guys talking.....nothing. After a couple of meetings I finally gave up, everyone really seemed to be in their own groups and were reluctant to include someone new (reminded me of high school).
Anyway, I was not involved in ANY club for some time after that even though I still had my Corrado and tried to learn as much about it as possible. I posted once in a while on the clubveedub forum as there are knowledgeable people on there, as well as tried to share my experiences on there when I could help. I then learned about this club and even though my vw wasn't "new" they were more than happy to include me, were very friendly and tried to go out of their way to make new people feel welcome, which is still a strong point point in this club today, (evident in our "I'm new here" types of posts). That's the key to gaining new people, being friendly and inviting and making sure they feel included, no one likes to stand off in the corner of the parking lot looking at the ground.
Now that being said, Duffy was very kind when I first joined, as were some of the more senior members but unless it's ingrained in the club atmosphere sometimes that isn't enough.
As I said at the begining, I have NOTHING against CVD, in fact I'm always excited to see what kinds of cars come to the shows (That beetle at WOW was simply amazing).
Perhaps when NVD was intitially formed there was some superiority complexes but I am certain those attitudes do not exist today.
So I guess that's it, I love the shows CVD puts on, love getting advice from people on the forum, and love cruising CVD website and refreshing all the cars on the front page, but I guess I'm NVD now.
Mods, if you feel this is inapropriate feel free to delete, also, to be fair, my CVD username is "g-charged" It's only right to remove my anonymity.
Perhaps some of the tension is due to the old "air cooled vs. water pumpers"
business that goes on.
Being part of both camps, having a MK4 and a 1971 Cal-look beetle, I have seen both sides of it. Even in some of the magazines there seems to be this sort of going on. Personally I dont really get it, I dont see why there should be any "tension" between 2 groups. People have often said to me that they find it odd that I have an aircooled beetle while driving a Mk4 jetta. The beelte is great, and is really fun & will turn more heads anyday, but I still enjoy the reliability, heater & heated seats & the fact that I know it will get me to work on time.
People by nature will always defend what they are into, and as a result, Mk4 owners may think that thier version of VW is the best, while there are purists that think that VW did not make a decent car past 1967. It really depends on what camp you are in. I am sure that there will be some among MkV vs. Mk4 people.
I really think that there needs to be respect among enthuseists, even if a certain car is not your thing. I personally dont like the whole Japanese import craze, but I can respect a car & owner that has had alot of time & dedication put into it, even if the pimped out Acura is not my thing.
I really think that all VW owners should have a mutual respect for one another, despite thier differances & choice of cars.

Amen. That is all that needs to be said here.

Curtis, you're right that the first post DID say "one car is faster/nicer" however I interpreted this as a question... as in "is it because you think the Mk4 is faster/nicer".
I think that the majority of us agree with you that this is not the case. There are some people in the club who I am sure feel differently but that is not what the club is about.
I noticed the same thing. My bitchfest thread about it on cvd is probably still there. But after awhile you do meet more people, I think it takes longer just because they've been a group longer, while everyone at NVD can qualify as "new" (but not for much longer I think).
I like mk2s and 3s but I really just like cars in general, including imports. Plus since our cars are newer there seems to be more new releases/things to talk about as opposed to an MK2.
It sucks when you like both groups of people and sort of have to pick.
We could have a ONE TIME cvd/nvd combined meet, outside of our regular meets, maybe to increase club love and just let everyone know that both exist and that there is room enough for both or us...
That is an interesting thought Kris. I think we just need to have more of us hit up the CVD events in the summer as they are great times and the CVDers always make us feel welcome. I also hope if I get my stuff together this summer that all the CVD cars will come out to our event!

in the first post i didnt mean i think any car is better or faster but i just felt that that was what some might think it. and just to get it out of the way i have a MKI MKIII and a MKIV and i love them all (MKIII is my fav). Curtis is right, im not sure where VW is going to end up. they do seem to be droping the ball.
