What is this thing hanging off the bottom of my car?

I just got in from Edmonton and my parents' residential streets were brutal. I scraped a bit and when looking under the car, noticed this:




I'm guessing it's whatever used to be attached to a plastic skid plate, which probably got sheared off ages ago. I'm a bit woried about it hanging off like that. Any ideas? Can it just be unscrewed? I'm bringing the car back to Simon this week to replace some upper strut mounts that were shot so maybe we can look at it then.

In other news, is anyone interested in getting a steel skid plate? I saw a Canadian company advertising one on VWV for about $350.

Here it is. I've done some reading and the aluminum they use is supposed to be very good, especially since it is a grade that deforms rather than cracking on impact. It also leaves more ground clearance than steel plates do. $369CDN + $35CDN shipping.

I'm interested in picking up one of these babies immediately. Anyone else? Group buy? (can sense Simon cringeing...)

The thing hanging is part of your side sheild. It attaches to your subrame. Don't worry I've seen alot of those hanging. It's not a hazzard.

It's part of your plastic side splash sheild. when you get your new skid plate make sure the kit comes with both side sheilds too or you will be S.O.L.

That is the one I bought and I love it, easy to install too. If you get a couple guys together Neil will give you a better price. He also has diamond plate skid plates now too that are pretty bling. They don't come with sideskirts but you can use use your old ones as they need little modification to work (I am only using the pulley side on mine). Consider this more questions... what do you mean by sideskirts? When I think sideskirts, I usually think of the aesthetic bits that go under the sides of the car. Are you refering to the plastic side shields that Dave is talking about? Does the car need to be lifted to do the install?

LOL that video is funny, I hadn't seen it before since I haven't visited his new upgraded site. I am pretty sure they fit the 1.8ts really nicely but email Neil to be sure. I am talking about the side pieces of plastic on the sideplate, I think they are needed (atleast on the passenger side) to keep rocks out of the serpentine belt etc. I think it would hard to install the plate without the car jacking up the front end... unless you mean the whole car rather then the front end just being jacked up?

Yep jacking up is fine. I just didn't know if the car had to go up on a lift in order to install this. I've emailed Neil and asked him about my hanging side plate mount thing and also directed him to this thread.
