No I'm not asking if I need to go on a diet.... but I think my car might. Any ideas on how to drop weight on an MK4? I'm not going to start pulling seats, or the radio... but any simplistic ways? I'm thinking of heading to some lighter 18" rims, as well as dumping the spare. Other than that, any other easy ideas?

Re: Losing Weight?
Maybe you could try one of these, Im not sure how well they would do in a Calgary winter but there are definitetly lighter than a stock battery.
From their website: "Tipping the scales at a mere 11.5 lbs, this battery sheds 25 pounds or more off the front end of most vehicles. This results in a lower center of gravity and improved handling, especially when installed in conjunction with other proprietary lightweight parts engineered by Braille"

Re: Losing Weight?
Yeah, with the exception of gutting the interior there isn't a lot that can be done to drop weight a lot.
Get rid of the engine covers, change the battery, remove spare, tools, rear floor cover, cargo cover, the lug caps, the brake dust shields, wheel well lining. You can rip out the carpet in the cabin and peel any sound deadening stuff out then put the carpet back in. Take out the hood liner. Remove the hatch access panels.
VW's are big ole hippos but everything has a purpose. They are designed very efficiently.
There was a company who made performance mods for the Neon's that sold bolt kits to replace every bolt on the car with lightweight aluminum bolts and nuts. Amazingly this saved THIRTY pounds. When the car is already gutted and stripped and weighs 1800 pounds 30 pounds is actually a considerable amount.
Oh and you could put on a titanium exhaust. That will reduce a few pounds and lighten your wallet by about 1500 bucks.
