  • Oil Change Tomorrow - Need Advice

I know this has been covered a million times, but I'm going in for an oil change tomorrow and I'd like to take my own synthetic oil. What are you guys putting in your 1.8T's these days? I know VW puts in 5w40. Which synthetic should I buy, where can I get it, and how much quantity do I need to get for an oil change?

    Thanks!!

I picked up the LubroMoli full synthetic 5W40 from C1. It gave me noticable smoothness in my revs on my 2.0.

It comes in a 5L jug and you use 4L of it. (buy four get one free??!!)

If you have the time, take it to U Fix It and do it yourself, that way you're sure not to damage your oilpan from overtorquing the drain plug and stripping the pan.

bill i'm assuming your getting a dealer to do it? if so get the castrol 5w40 syntec thats what i roll with.. you can buy it from like autozone and napa and stuff but it costs the same that the dealer sells it for/litre so i just let them dump it in.. plus you get that extra .5 litre

Yeah, I'm just getting SouthCentre to do it... I don't have the time/patience/tools to deal with it myself. So there's no place to get the Castrol Syntec 5w40 cheaper?

I just picked up 5 1 quart bottles of Castrol Syntec 5w40 at Crappy Tire. It was on sale... but they didn't have any 4 liter jugs of it. Should do the job just fine... thanks for your help!

FYI - not sure what the prices are like in Calgary, but in Halifax it's cheaper to buy four one litre bottles than one four litre jug at Wal-Mart . . . go figure. However, I'm sure all you union types will be joining me in boycotting the big American giant after they shut down that store in Quebec. It's a few cents more at Crappy Tire, but still cheaper than the stealership (Steele VW in Dartmouth, not sure 'bout the rest).

I'm running Castrol Syntec 5w40 . . . can't compare it to anything since I've only changed the oil once when I purchased the car a few weeks back.

You Calgary guys notice a diff at low engine temps with the 0w40?

5/40 synthetic for our cars, nothing else. Castrol is in lots of places finally (but nowhere has the big jugs - fine by me but odd). The delvac hits all the requirements, yet people are still leery of it. Definately not enough history on the 0/40 for me to try it.

I don't think you'll find too many union sympathizers in Alberta.

Really . . . I thought it'd be just the opposite (not many around here except for guys on the docks). I've met many tradesmen from Alberta who carry their cards and even have the big trade moustache that goes past their bottom lip.
