  • Quick Question

I have a friend that's looking into a TDi. It's a good price and it's a 2004, but, do all 2004's have the PD engine? If they didn't is there an easy way to tell (he's mechanically inclined but not too familiar with VW's)? Thanks.

Edit: I've also been hearing that the PD isn't all it's cracked up to be, is it really a bad thing or just that it would be better to have the non PD? I know the "non" is easier to mod and what not but other than that?

    Thanks

        Re: Quick Question

        cons:

less you can mod (because it gets really expensive if you want more than just a chip)

        pros:

its really quiet, if you like that sort thing

the reason they suck here is because of the fuel, its crap, so dont blame vw for it.

          Re: Quick Question

The euro spec PD is hands down the best diesel engine out there. Unfortunely the NA one gets a little less MPG but has a bit more HP. Mods are more expensive as the injectors and integrated into the engine head and hard to get at. In a couple years I am sure there will be tons of mods for the PD as they are just starting to trickel in now. Take a look on the net for modded PD150's and you will see what that engine is capable of. I would say go for it, get a chip to start and wait on the rest.

            Re: Quick Question

99% of people seem to only get basic bolt-on mods anyhow and be very happy with them. A chip and an exhuast, along with some VAG-COM tuning and maybe an air-filter can help you maximize the PD's potential.

              Re: Quick Question

Thanks guys, my only concern with recomending it was just that I heard that the MPG isn't that great (was supposed to be better than the Non PD) and it didn't heat up in the winter and stuff.

                Re: Quick Question

On the plus side the HP and torque numbers with JUST a chip are excellent with the PD's in comparison with the older models. I've seen online dynos putting stage 1 chipped PD's at 250+ ft/lbs torque or higher.
