  • I need a VAG-COM, or Why Haven't I Exploded Yet?

Since I have corrected my mis-fire problem I have been fiddling with the SPS-3 to see what I can squeeze out of it.

Right now I have found that with Mohawk 94 the car performs VERY well at LB9, T7. That's right T7.

When pushed up to T8 it starts to sound a little less than great, and doesn't seem to pull as hard as T7.

I am running a stock N75, so the initial surging is minimal

I get no stutters, no hiccuping, no knock, no ping, no CEL. I have a couple of theories as to why it is going so well, including the inaccuracy of the ass-dyno.

One of these days I will get my hands on to a VAG-COM and see what the computer has to say about things.

Tomorrow I will push it up to HB0.

I would help you out but my laptop is still waiting a floppy adapter so I can install a new OS, so I am SOL right now.

I have a vag-com and also revo 4bar software. I don't have the sps3 though. I'd be willing to spend some time logging if you wouldn't mind letting me spend some time with the sps3 box. I'm in Edmonton though.

Well before the roads got really ugly I got some leadfoot driving in at HB0. Pulls damned hard I tell ya. Still not a trace of nasty.

When it gets dry out again I will spend a couple of days at HB1.

One of these days I will get a downpipe and things will go even better.

Jetta03 - Thanks for the offer! I may be up in Edmonton in the not too distant future as I have to go up there to do some work on my other car. I also want to dyno the sps-3 settings.

I do all my dyno stuff at Apex Modified on Parsons Road. Do you know of them? They give me killer prices on things.

I've been using HB0 and T7 for the last little while after filling up with 94 octane and its been ultra smooth. I've also been setting it to HB0 and T5 with 91 octane.

I like T7 under any boost setting. It sounds and feels very smooth. The car seems a little rougher at T8 and T9, but again that is an unsubstantiated observation.

I just wish this damned snow would go away! I mean, really.. It's February! Sheesh.

Which N75 are you running 1.8trip?

I'm back to the stock N75. I found that although the boost doesn't come as strong, the stock N75 hits and holds the same boost in the end. I tended to hit overboost on warm days under ~3/4 throttle with the N75J.

                Re: I need a VAG-COM, or Why Haven't I Exploded Yet?

Well it would seem that HB2T7 is about the end of the line.

It pulls real good for the first while but then I can feel that the turbo is getting a little toasty.

If I drive around for a bit and let things cool down I can make some hard pulls for a while before it gets... 'weak' again.

I think that this setting is a good setting for general around town driving. With some 100 octane (or some 94 with a swig of toluene / xylene) I think that HB3T7 or T8 could be useful for trips to the strip.

Curiously at HB2T7 with my stock N75 the boost doesn't exceed 17-18 psi, whereas with my N75J it would run way over 20 psi. I am not sure how to explain why that high boost didn't feel as 'limp'.

Were I to get a large downpipe I suspect there would be a few additional seconds of cooler boost and some gains from the reduced restriction. An IC spray might add a couple more, but I definately think the little K03s is at the end of the road in terms off efficiency.

Do you monitor the block that shows timing pull while increasing the timing? Or is this just butt dyno?

                    Pure ass dyno and anecdote.

As I mentioned I don't have a vag and it's been purely feel.

There is a definate difference between T7 and T6 in terms of feel. T7 feels considerably stronger, particularly under mid-throttle.

On my next trip to the dyno I frequent in Edmonton I will do a couple or 10 runs with the different settings.

                      Re: I need a VAG-COM, or Why Haven't I Exploded Yet?

So I was driving back from Lethbridge today and I was going.. Uhhhh.. fast.

I reduced the SPS3 to HB1 T5 due to some harshness on the way down when I was going... not quite as fast.

                      ANYWAY..

After about 15 minutes sitting around 5,000-ish RPM with boost at around 14 - 16 PSI it just drops back to 11.5 PSI. I let off entirely and put the pedal down again - same thing.

It seemed that the car reverted to stock programming. The off-boost timing advance wasn't there, the on-boost power (i.e. the boost) seemed entirely stock.

I shut the engine down and restarted and everything was back to performance settings. The car ran strong, pulled hard and I resumed speed. A few minutes later it happened again.

Anyone experienced or heard of this happening?

Either soft limp or some kind of Revo setting where if it detects problems (ie timing pull) it is reverting you to a safe program. Which would make sense. I have criticized SPS3 since it came out because I think its a bad idea to give the end user the ability to increase timing and boost unless they know what they are doing (most end users don't). Maybe Revo is not as dumb as I thought, since I figured they would have instances of people blowing up their engines or at least taking out turbos within a year.

I would say that you should reduce your settings slightly.

I don't think you should have any problems with HB1 and T5. Especially in this weather. Now you really need to get a vagcom and get it checked out.

As I mentioned before, I've had problems with the N75J and overboost. Are you still using the N75J?

Nope. I dumped my J and went back to stock. I prefer the control of the stock valve to the wild swings of the J.

Tomorrow the plugs come out for general inspection.

I haven't been able to reproduce the problem in lower gears. - just 5th.

My suspicion is that it sees the IAT spike huge, or the cat efficiency goes to poop. Only a VAG will tell.

Use an overboost kit. Solved my weird gear shift problems.
