  • Got some cold winter questions for you guys

As the title reads I have some cold weather questions for eveyone, seeing this is the first winter that I'm going to be driving my '02 Jetta 1.8T. I should be asking these questions a month ago but when you work out of town as much as I do an have a company truck you don't really have the time to think about it. And well seeing I've have sometime over the holidays to think about it, here they are.

    1. Is there any way to lock your doors while the car is running? By means of the other remote or something?

    2. Do anyone use gasline antifreeze and if so what should I be using?

    3. Finally, when you plugged in your car do you have it on a timmer or let it be plugged in for all nite? Because I heard that you only need it plugged in for a few hours prior to start up. And leaving them plugged in all nite will break down the oil?

If anyone as some views on anyone of these questions lets hear them.

    Happy New Years!!!!

    1. Never tried.

    2. No, gas is reformulated by all manufacturers for each season in Canada.

    3. Leaving it plugged in should not harm the car, it doesn't get that hot and why would oil break down with heat? You're going to change the oil anyhow, so no big deal.

        1. As above, use the second key and lock it with the door (remote won't work)
        2. same fuel year round!! (like kris said)
        3. I use a timer, because we have oil pan heaters, you should give it a couple hours, but no need to use any more, because it doesn't matter how cold the oil gets (it won't split a block!), and the couple hours will easily warm the oil up enough.....

I have a timer that I bought at crappy tire for that purpose. I have it set to come on 4 hours before I leave the house in the morning. That way it does not run up my power bill.
