  • My trip to Northland.

So I finally get a chance to get the car in for some basic service and to have my coil pack issue looked at.

At the end of the day they charge me $225-ish for the 'C' service and detailed on the invoice is the replacement air filter for $34.15. So I look in the back seat, then in the hatch and there is no air filter to be seen! I looked in those places because the VW air filter they listed sure as heck wouldn't have fit on my CAI.

Then we get to the coil pack problem. They found multiple mis-fire codes in the ECU and cleared them. Great.. I knew they were there and it adds evidence to my story. But then they say it is from water being in the coil pockets due to the engine cover not being on. Riiiiight. The engine cover. You know, the one with all the holes in it. That keeps out water real goodly. Then there is a note stating that the bucking and vibration I claimed I felt was probably the traction control system. Cuz I'm an idiot.

Then I mentioned that under moderate to hard acceleration the 1-2 shift would grind. I gave the SA the conditions to replecate the problem and told him it would need to be on dry pavement. The note I got was "tranny fine. vw trannys will grind when power shifted." Again, I'm an idiot.

The service advisor, whom I remember being an SA at Canadian Tire and recall him being less than accomodating, took down none of the notes and conditions I gave him, didn't bother to acknowledge the two burned up spark plugs I showed him and basically brushed off anything I had to say.

I am immensely PO'd with them and now have to waste another day or so to take it elsewhere.

Their service manager is getting a long and evil letter from me with cc to VW from the start.

    Grr.

my service with them is and has been about the same. when my heated seat cought fire i asked them to disconect it but they didnt, and when i drove right in they where like we dont know how to. so i told them to just disconcet the switch and let it be. they were like oh ok yeah we could do that.

What an experience. No matter how evil the letter will be the SA/Customer Service people will just act the same.

Yes, they charge you for the things that they do not do. For example, rotating tires - how did they get my wheels off when I did not supply the wheel locks? I was also charged for an air filter and have a CAI. I was told that the total price for the service is not flexible. This is the same at other dealerships, so it must be VW policy.

As for the "engine cover" excuse, that is pretty lame. They have a list of blanket excuses for things, and that is one of them.

Well, I am going to head up there today or tomorrow and tell them that I either want the money back, or I want the damn air filter. I have zero use for the filter but I am certainly not going to let them have a free $32 bucks at my expense.

Hell, I'll mount the filter on my diesel, or on a window fan if I have to.

Oh yeah, and on leaving the dealership and driving home I reproduced the gear grind (and it was NOT a power shift) and threw a mis-fire code as well.

I'm pretty sure charging for parts that are not provided is considered fraud. Ie, if it says 34bucks for airfilter, as opposed to a blanket "250 for all service and needed parts"

I'd throw a stink just on principal (and you could sell that air filter).

As for service advisors at NL, Paul is the best although I had a pretty good experience with that older scottish guy?

I’ll ask them what is a power shift they are talking about.

This is NOT the same at all dealerships and not a VW policy! I can't believe they charged you for that stuff and didn't do it, if it is not done it is discounted from the total price of the service! Yes i would call that fraud! The big dealers sure beat you guys up in Calgary. I always hear so many horror stories.

I'm a new VW owner and I can honestly say their dealerships are terrible for ripping people off. Most places dont charge for the little things that Northland tries to get away with. Kinda off topic here, I am a new member and I was interested in becoming more involved with the club. Any pointers?

Interesting discovery......I tried to see if Northland had a website (so I could look up their phone number). Well when I googled, there was no Northland site but the second link on the list was a link to this post or one of the others about how Northland is a joke, that's not very good publicty.

....I did find the website but just buy guessing....
