1.8t with chip daily driving

How is the car in terms of power with just a chip . Usually no need to downshift due to all the low end torque i bet.
Coming from someone who currenty owns a celica gts and use to own a civic sir Im sick of the high redline and the annoying power band. Like taking off from a stop light you gotta rev pretty high to keep up with vans and other cars.
Where do you guys start feelling the power around what rpm?
How quick is it compared to other cars on the road?

I don't think there was ever really a low end torque issue with the cars...I mean the chip gives more power, maintains good drivability, but not really moreso below the spool point of the turbo.....VW's are not peaky power motors, I drive mine between 2500-4000rpm all the time, and can still break traction....

you can cruise at 2000 in 5th gear, and not feel like you're terribly bogged down

Even without a chip, these engines are nice and torquey town low!

Power kicks in ~2500 rpm I'd say. But it's pretty smooth delivery...

I find I'm between 2500 and 4000. Just cruising, I shift at just under 3000. Car starts to pull hard just around 2500 in all gears.... Good power. Good spool. Dont know about the chip, I dont have one... but some of the dyno numbers have shown that a chip increases peak horse, peak torque and increases the peak power range....

Edit: I had no problems keeping up with a Celica GTS on the way to Seattle this summer... on the I90 we cruised at about 160 km and I was right with him the whole time... corners and all..

Wow n that was without a chip.
So 2500 rpm u get pushed into ur seat. I've gone for a ride in a vr6 gti n wasnt impressed.

Compared to cars like your celica and civic a chipped 1.8t will make a LOT more torque at a pretty low rpm. All of that low end torque comes at the price of lack of top end power. Ko3 turbos seem to run out of steam at around 5500rpm I think.

The 1.8T will feel faster, although the Celica is a faster car than the 1.8T or VR6 VW (stock).

A chipped GTI will run REAL close to an R32. I've also regularly whipped stock and near stock 5.0's and more than a few 4.6's.

My Race City times show me as pulling similar times to new Mustang GT's on the strip. Last year I was quartering in 15.2 with horrid 2.6 second 60 foot times at Race City and 14.5 with 2.4's at Bud Park in Edmonton (yay lower altitude!). That's also with a near full tank of Mohawk 91 (94 in Calgary) and zero weight reduction and no SPS 3 futzing.

I would have to disagree Kris....I was shopping for a celica GTS before I bought the VW and was extremely dissapointed by the performance of the car.....There is no way at all that a GTS would beat the GTI, there just wasn't enough steam until a bit over 7K on the tach.....

Not taking a side but after owning a GSR I will say that it takes a while to learn how to get all the performance out of a high rever. Most torquey cars will feel great and over time you can usually get them even better, but a high reving engine takes a bit of "finese" I will say until you get used to it. I remember after getting my car being really dissapointed with it thinking "How does this thing have 170hp? It's gutless" But once I learned how to drive it it so fun and much faster than I originally thought it was (after thinking I drove it hard on the test drive). After I owned a rustang it was against my instincts to rev the car.

The power/weight ratio of the GTS is much closer to a WRX than to a GTI. I agree that the torque is not there, however torque mostly makes it FEEL faster. A TDI feels faster than a VR6 but isn't (except Bart's).

The power weight ratio is good but it makes that power at like 7000 rpm . LIke i said u gott wait till ur past 6000rpm to be makin that power n below that ur making alot less.

Daily driving shifting at 3000rpm u feel no power.

The nice thing about the 1.8t's vs 'other' is the pancake flat torque. Being able to pass on the highway and not downshift or feel like you have unleashed a horde of speed-amped gerbils is nice.
