  • DP, high flow cats

I'm looking for some opinions and maybe a push in one direction or the other.

I'm riding the fence here as to weather I should get the full turbo back and risk the annoying and at the moment none fixable/trickable CEL, or to seach for a downpipe/stock cat/ catback option

who all is running an 03 1.8T with a 2.5" turbo back and not experiencing CEL trouble. Is there an option for running a dp with a stock cat and then the catback?? would this system even be worth it?? I would assume that replacing the High flow cat is pretty significant on turbo charged car...how much would just the downpipe contribute??

    well thanks in advance
    cheers,

    johnny

I've been running a full 2.5" Brullen turboback since the spring of 2004 and have not had a single check engine light related to the cat. I highly recommend the full turbo back.

99% of the CEL problems are caused by the 3"dp+cat. I don't think I've ever seen a problem with the 2.5" systems.

That said, I had a 2.5" turbo back on my car for 2 years and never had a problem. I've now got a 2.5"dp+cat mated to basically a stock cat-back, and have still never had a CEL.

Funny, my Brullen caused one since 3 days after install.....That being said, I haven't heard of too many cases that no CEL came on, so maybe you got lucky!

It depends on when you had the brullen DP installed because if you noticed that before 2004 a Brullen DP was $495 and after that the price raised to around $600 something. Brullen told me that the price was raised because of a revision to the catalytic convertor to reduce the CEL's the vehicles were receiving.

Could the CEL's have anything to do with the year of the car, did they change o2 sensors or even touch up the ECU a bit making it more sensitive....are CELs not found often in say 02' but more in 03' 04'????

I'm not aware of any changes to the emission systems for the MK4's. The CEL is caused by the catalytic converter and the settings of the ECU. High flow cats have less surface area and allow more gas to pass through, they are less efficient than the stock, therefore the ECU may see a problem with the emission system.

My faulty o2 sensor was giving me a CEL.

So is there a variety of o2 sensors to look at or is it just a matter of replacing it.....
