  • How accurate are the VDO boost gauges?

I think my vdo boost gauge reads 3-4 psi more than actual, but only at high boost. Last year I had a minor boost leak that had me in soft limp, and the gauge showed 5psi, which is right. Pretty sure that its reading more than it should at full boost though(19psi- should be 15-16)

    Any thoughts?

Well I have a VDO guage and I'm running Revo software and mine will spike at around 19-20psi and then level off at around 17psi. From what I've read on vw vortex this pretty normal readings.

I was really tired last night which is why I was so abrupt. So first, appologies.

Second, it is very unlikely that a gauge would not be accurate, and even MORE unlikely that the top end would be inaccurate while the bottom is fine (I assume it still shows vacuum at idle). Its a mechanical gauge and very simple/reliable.

Third, its even MORE unlikely that it would be showing too high rather than too low. Leaks are possible, but how do you get extra pressure into a mechanical gauge?

Lastly, you do not have the stock turbo so your readings should not be the same. The only reason everyone else's boost falls off towards redline is that everyone else is at the very limit of the turbo's flow. You probably are really running 19lbs through the powerband.

We can do some vag logging and compair it to the VDO.

I just changed my VDO, both were mechanical, just a different series.....The readings are a bit different, I would say my old one read high (13-14 psi at WOT), whereas this one reads 11-12psi WOT........Vac is a little different too, with my old one reading just below -20inHg, and this one a little above -20inHg........For reference, I changed the guage just for the thru light face & perfect match LED, as well as 25psi top instead of 20psi....Nothing was wrong with it....

Hmm, interesting. My vac is just under 20. Something I forgot to add is that when I was running a split second ebc. You shouldnt see over 14.5psi with one, yet I would hold 17psi according to my gauge.

The reason I bring this up stems from a recent trip to tecmotion for a dyno run, which was a good experience overall. Their boost readings say 16psi to the end of the pull. On the street though I get 19psi to redline in 3rd gear and up.

Do you have any free time this week, Brent?

How do they (tecmotion) measure boost?

Gauge might be faulty. In most cases people have boost/vac. leak.

As stonewall said, check with a vagcom as well.

How would one measure boost if they arent either electronically hooked up or boost gauged?

Well, not sure what instrument tecmotion used for a boost reading, but they did attach it to the same line that my boost gauge runs off.

I don't really see whats wrong with VDO...Millions of guages can't be wrong....Is omori that much more accurate?? I have yet to see proof...sure it looks pretty, but not $300+ pretty....
