Do any of you think this would be a bad oil to run? Its castrol syntec, just in a different weight right, I run 5W30, and VW recommends 5W40......thoughts??

No Castrol at all for me. Running 50 weights oil in winter is suicide.

No, obviously not for winter, but in the summer I'll give it a shot....If NL didn't panic and immediately remove it from your car, it can't be that bad....Thanks everyone for the wonderful responses.....

                    Re: 5W50 synthetic...good or bad?

Well I hardly see why it would be detrimental, I mean its just a higher top end temperature rating.....

Yah but you can still go too heavy on the top end. If some guy invented 5/80 oil, that's still twice as thick as recommended. I trust the VW engineers so I'll stick to 5/40 and nothing else (unless there's huge supporting research).

I'm pretty sure they've been putting 5w50 in my VR6 since day 1.

What does your VR6 manual say?

I didn't mean to imply it would do bad things to your car. But there has been reports that the 0/40 mobil stuff is too thin in warmer temps, yet tons of mk4 people are dumping it in cause the label says "good for euro cars". Also the 1.8T oil sump is tiny compared to other cars - there's not a lot of room for screwing around. The dealer tried putting 15/50 in my car two years ago - in november. I asked them to repeat it 3 times before calling them insane. Remember, dealerships also think 22 psi tires are ok. Trust the factory.

What dealer thinks 22psi is ok?Every car I have ever seen new is set at 34 from the dealer.

They are even less tolerant of 22psi of boost I bet.
