They have had 4 door GTIs in MK3 & MK4 body styles in other parts of the world but never here of course I always thought a MK3 4 door VR6 GTI would be a sweet car!

Well I think 2-doors look a little sportier but a 4-door would def. have a better chance of being purchased by someone like me (I think my golf will be the last 2 door i'll ever own )

Hey Blair,
I agree that it should be a fantastic car. You might need to extend your timeframe a little however. Last we were told is that the golf and GTI will not reach our shores until late 2006 as a 2007 model year! I hope its BS but thats what i've heard from several reliable sources! Oh well, I guess it gives you more time to save!
Cheers

Wow 2 years that seems a little ridiculous but could work better for me just could be hard to wait. I think it will probably be somewhere in the middle like mid 2006 I guess it could be a race then which will be first my new place at Summer 2006 or the new car.... Thanks for keeping me posted Derek

And the quote showing the guy didn't do his homework...
The fourth generation Golf went on sale in 1998 and buyers could choose from two power levels and a diesel for the GTI.
I have never heard of diesel EVER in a GTI anywhere in the world, has anyone else?

The lack of a 2-door A3 in Canada would be my only reason to even consider the new GTI. That and the 2.0L turbo is probably going to be very good. I will probably own my Mk4 until the Mk6 comes out however, since I have invested so much time, cash and love!
Its interesting that they call it the best performance hatchback since there aren't really any other performance hatchbacks. Unless you count the WRX, which a chipped 2.0T may be able to compete against. Does anyone know how the power/weight ratio of the new car compares? is the Mk5 heavier than the Mk4 or lighter (to me the Mk4 is too heavy of a car).
I am not so enthusiastic about DSG since I was told by some of you guys that it doesnt support added torque/hp very well.
The article also says - "The new car doesn't depart dramatically from a styling theme that has endured for decades. It's just that much more attractive."
Yes it does bloody well depart from the styling theme.
I can definitely say that I will not own a mk5 golf or jetta. If and when I do buy a new car it will either be a new Passat (depending on how it looks), or a pre-2005 Audi S4
Present
2010 Audi A4 S-Line
2007 VW GTI 2.0T
Past
2003 VW Jetta GLI

1984 VW Rabbit GTI

I agree. Although I will have to see how I like the A3 Sportback when they finally show up, but I'm having a hard time feelin' it from just the pictures. I wonder if there are and good photoshops around of lowered A3 Sportbacks with cool wheels and kits? Hmmmm..... I don't even know where to look.
I would definitely rather go Audi than VW next time though.
