  • SMASH! (long)

Well, bizarre story from today. I'm sitting at a light on MacLeod Trail when I hear a loud bang behind my head. I turn around, and the rear window on the driver's side is completely smashed. My fiance and I get out to find out what the hell happened, and there is no rock, no bb hole, nothing. The window just spiderwebbed all to hell. The focal point of all the cracks was a little piece about .5 cm round. No chip on that piece of glass, no hole, but it's the point all the other cracks point towards. I took it in to South Center because I didn't think I'd make it over to 5th Ave and still have any glass in the window. The took a few pictures and are going to get back to me on if this is covered by warranty. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing happening?

    Jeff

EDIT: I really don't think anything hit the window. Look at the second picture. That little piece is at the very center of the cracks, and the glass was unmarked in any way. HEHE, can't get the damn pics to work, check out my post on vortex:

Any windows open?? Sunroof?? I heard a couple things like that, especially on the 4 doors, and back windows....Otherwise if a rock was kicked up and hit the window at just the right angle it could happen.....Bummer, sorry to hear about that! Hopefully they fix it for you!!

yea i've heard of the wierd pressure breaks from doing like 150 with the sunroof and shutting windows or some crap but to be just sitting there somebody either shot your window with a pellet gun or a car drove by from the other direction and a rock somehow managed to shoot sideways super crazy hard style...

ps.. after seeing the title of the post i thought oh crap his car is totalled so good thing that isnt' the case

My buddy had his rear passenger window explode on his Acura EL for no reason when he was coming back from the mountains. No one was on the road with him, and he said it sounded like a pop. He still had to pay though (older car).

Weird, I have seen pictures of that happen to back windows on a golf but never the side. So I guess that side panel has to come off yet again eh?

                That sucks dude.

The same thing happened supposedly to my dad and mom on their honey moon. They were driving their VW bug to niagra falls, when *smash* back window just busted and broke all over the back seat. Nothing hit it, nothing touched it, it just broke on its own. Wierd.

LOL , I noticed that too.

I also think that something must have hit the window. A car in the turning lane may have spit up a rock or something? Whatever it was, that really sucks that you have to replace it. Hopefully VW will help you out

Well, there were no cars in the turning lane, and I was about 8 cars back from the light. The traffic was all going left to right across MacLeod, and no vehicles were in the oncoming lanes (light was red for them too, and no one turning onto MacLeod. The most likely explanation besides space aliens shooting it with a disruptor beam is a kid with a bb gun that somehow never actually put a chip/hole in the window, but managed to shatter it. This is one of the craziest things I've ever seen. Hmm, magic rock theory, or the kid on the grassy knoll?

                      Re: SMASH! (long)

One night a friend of mine and I were cruising in his Infiniti j30 when the driver's side passenger window exploded inward, basically covering both of us in glass. Luckilly there was no traffic either in our lane or the oncomming lane; I am sure you are not surprised to find out that having a window explode next to your head does not make it easy to drive calmly.

We pulled over immediately and started trying to figure out what it was. Since we were alone on an isolated road, I am pretty sure no rocks were kicked up by other cars. Since the window literally rained glass into the inside of the car, I think there must have been an impact from the outside.

We guess it was a BB gun or something. It takes a sick person to shoot at people's car windows while they are driving. Never did figure it out. The cost to replace the window was extensive since it was a limited edition infiniti with rare bronze smoked (not tinted) glass.

Yeah, that adds to the weirdness. The window was completely intact when it first popped. The glass didn't start to fall out until I opened the door to see what had happened. The pressure difference is what caused the glass to start falling all over the place. The pics you see are after driving it to South Center Fine Cars, and then back to my place. Definitely one of the weirdest things I've seen. I'm still not convinced that it was a bb. Someone had mentioned porcelain from a spark plug, which would also explain the lack of chip on the glass. I didn't see anything on the road near my car, including pieces of porcelain, rocks, or anything else. I may have to blame this one on space aliens.
