well the thing with the VR6 clutch is that its a 228mm clutch, and you need a 228mm flywheel to mate it to. The stock 1.8t stuff is 220mm I believe, so if you upgrade to the VR6 clutch, you NEED a suitable flywheel (whether it be a stock g60, a lightened one, whatever). the lighter the flywheel, the faster the revs are going to drop, but the might gain a couple horsepower. the stock 1.8t flywheel I believe is 21lbs or somewhere around there, so lightened options include ones from 15lbs down to 7, depending on how extreme you wanna go.

      Re: 1.8t and Stock Clutch

The issue with the VR6 setup is vibration from the actual engine that transmits itself to the gearbox, the 1.8t setup is similar to the the Porsche 911 which uses a sliding dual-mass setup, the flywheel actually rotates as a two piece unit to absorb torque, vibration and shock loads. The VR6 unit will lock up quicker and harder, this is where the difference is.

Similar type units can be found on american cars as a 'harmonic balancer' to privide a similar reaction, they smooth to power going to the transmission.

Have I answered anything or just confused myself?

      Cheers to all,
      Miles

Haha awesome! Does the beetle chasis offer any advantage over the Golf?

So the excess vibration of the 1.8 is what causes the increase in shock to the tranny? The 1.8T stock clutch setup is built to reduce this which is why it's less "grippy", while the vr6 setup is not?

Would harder 1.8T motor mounts (which I have) reduce this?

no, it is the lightening of the flywheel that causes the damage.

About the chassis, the Beetle is less aerodynamic than the Golf, and harder to work on, but the Beetle keeps us on TV, that's what pays the bills!
so depending on your outlook you decide which is better.
            Cheers

I think the Beetle can look better modded than the Golf.

As miles said, there are a lot fewer of them too, and having a unique car is where its at.

Too bad the DSG transmission VW uses is not mod-friendly though.

Got my car back from the shop today with the new clutch/flywheel. Feels great, really smooth and just like stock. You can really tell the flywheel is lighter when you put in the clutch and the rev's drop like bombs over baghdad.

I actually got 2 boston terriorists and the one in the picture is the one that farts all the time. They are not allowed on the leather seats in my car only on a blanket!

Staying with the clutch idea I think I am just going to drive it a little more as is and wait to get the clutch with the stage II upgrade with dual intercoolers and exhaust (might be dreaming... Just need the cash) I want my car to be a sleeper but stylish.

its definately a noticeable difference. Car pulls faster to the red line and feels much faster. Maybe it was because my previous clutch was so shitty that it never caught 100% though and now it finally does.

Did you replace the throw bearrings too? I have read it is a good idea to do them at the same time because if they go you have to take it all apart again anyways.

I think it is something in the breed because mine farts alot also and I have a friend in the states that has one as well and theirs farts alot also. I just recently started letting my dog even ride in the new car. They are great companions though, and very well behavied, don't you think?

The vet told me because of their corkscrew tails is actually like a spinal defect and clauses them to have a weak sphincter (yes I said it), thus they can't hold any air back! They are smart quiet and hyper dogs and they are behaved if you are watching. Turn your back then.......
