  • 1.8t and Stock Clutch

Any of you with a chipped 1.8t feel that the stock clutch is weak? I'm going to upgrade once it gets real bad. My buddies 1.8t Gli with the upgraded clutch vs the GLS is a heck of a lot better!

If you have upgraded, what did you get for a clutch? Any recommendations?

I think it's pretty common to get the vr6 clutch when you burn out your stock one. It's a good choice and holds up well for the price.

I have 110km on my car, being chipped for 60k of that. Clutch held up awesome until about 105k when it absolutely died. I've had a clutch on order the last couple months and it finally came last week, so tomorrow it goes into the mechanic to get replaced.

I went with the OEM Sach's VR6 Clutch with a Autotech lightened G60 flywheel. Stock like drivability, but able to handle an excess of 300 ft/lbs of torque. And the flywheel should release a few hidden hp too I'm hoping.

oh, and $1100 installed at C1 for the combo I believe.

Mine is now borderline after about 60,000kms. I consider myself "rough" on it. I also learned to drive manual on this clutch.

I'm at 55k, and it's still going strong. I'm pretty gentle on it though. At the track I get the wicked burning clutch smell but that's only a few times a season.

I'll be going with the same setup Simon has (above) probably in 2 years. Vr6 clutch and g60 flywheel...

well you're not chipped, so your clutch wont prematurely fail. should last 200k if it remains stock.

                    Re: 1.8t and Stock Clutch

We use a stock clutch in the race beetle, 30000KM of racing abuse and about 300HP and it is still fine, pulled it to look after about 20000k and no noticeable wear. Word to the wise, be careful using the VR6 flywheel combo, this transfers much more driveline shock to the gearcase than the 1.8 dual-mass, I know of several gearbox failures, bearing and housing that were a result of this.

                    Cheers

The mk4s all used the same 5-speed gearbox, no? Or are you only talking about a vr6 clutch with a lightened flywheel?

I'm not sure what you are asking, yes MK IV all use the same gearbox, just with different ring and pinions, and one dif. gear ratio, we use the 2L box because it is geared the lowest of the bunch (increasing the torque load to the box). The 1.8t uses a different flywheel plate/disc unit) lightening the flywheel will help with spinning up the engine but the rotational mass of the heavier flywhee provides better pull off the line and helps in the corners.

so is this good or bad or should I just get the clutch and not the light flywheel.

Well you said that replacing the 1.8T clutch with the VR6 clutch gives more shock to the driveline, and can cause failures. I was just saying that I thought both the VR6 and 18T have the same driveline, so how can a 18T with vr6 clutch give more shock than a vr6 with a vr6 clutch (which seems to hold up fine). Or maybe it doesn't and vr6 gearboxes die more often - I dunno.

Btw - wheres the pics of the race beetle? It the one that's at WoW?
