  • Anybody upgraded their MK4 TDi to a GT17 turbo?

I am just wondering about this. The FINAL performance mod I'll ever do to my Golf. I'm interested in cost, complexity... the usual stuff. I know to check out the tdiclub (I'm a member there too), but I thought I'd start here first to get the semi-local views.

I almost bought a PD130 turbo for my car but bills left from the wedding and wanting a house got the better part of my rational mind. Hopefully sometime next year I will be able to upgrade the turbo but to many things planned in the mean time. I have heard some good things about the upsolute stage 3 kit which I believe uses a GT17 turbo but from what I hear a non-vnt turbo will have way to much lag for my liking.

On a TDI, because of the narrow powerband, I am not sure I could live with a non-VNT turbo.

Bart was talking about upgrading to the next biggest VNT turbo from europe.

Injectors plus programming alone make a HUGE difference even without the turbo.

I've done the intake, injectors (Bosch 0.205), ECU (UP of course ) and the exhaust (Supersprint fron the turbo to the tailpipe). From 1900 to 4500 rpm's she pulls like a little bull. While that may seem narrow from a gassers POV, for a diesel it's huge. On the dyno, the torque curve is more like a big, flat banquet table with kick ass on the menu.

A bigger turbo is the last thing I want to bring to the table. Dessert, if you will.

The problem with VNT turbos is they are weak and prone to failure. Compaired to the turbos they put in the MK3 TDI's they will not last as long. The big TDI guru's are playing with non-VNT for just that reason. The powerband is not that narrow as the big turbos when setup right hit boost at 2k so there is not that much lag.

True enough. My bro has it on his Cummins. BOOYA!!!

But I don't have the room for the tank. I use the hatch area ALOT for hauling all sorts of crap. Because of that I don't even have the room to add an extra amp or two for the stereo. Maybe it's time for a Jetta wagon...

You can use a fairly small tank... doesn't have to be like a BBQ tank! Room is no excuse.

I dream of one day walking up to my car in a Fast n the furious setting with all the street ricers... with a little camping propane bottle in hand. While they laugh screwing it in then smoking all the little homeboys.

Stop dreaming. A modded up TDi can best most of them out there. Been there, done it already. Alot of the Fast N' Dubious ricers out there are all for show. They'd rather drop 5 grand on body kits and color co-ordinated and neon crap than putting it in the drivetrain where it counts and will never be seen.

Well I dream of saving up the $$ then I do have to say walking up to my car with one of those 1L coleman bottles would be hilarous though.

Yea, but what if someone comes along and shoots up your car, you can't yell something catchy like "NOS" and jump to the ground, are you gonna say, "CAMP STOVE PROPANE"? No one will know what you mean and people could get hurt.
