  • Changing the rear wheels - am I just a total weakling, or is this a problem?

I decided to bite the bullet and swap my wheels today. The fronts went on no problem, but when it came time to do the rears, I couldn't get the damn things off!!

The lugs came off super easily, but it was when they were off that I couldn't pull the wheel from the hub. Not sure if it has seized, or what, but I didn't want to risk pulling on them too hard while the car was jacked up. I tried everything from simply pulling on the wheel, to trying to wrench it from side to side, but the bugger was tighter than my ass.

I don't really want to go to the dealership or any tire shops as they're going ot be jammed with winter tire changeovers, so if anyone has ideas as to how I could get the buggers off, I would preash it. For the meantime, I'm rocking the 16/18 set up.

This problem is pretty normal for dubs. Water gets in between the hub and the wheel and never really dries out so it rusts a little and seizes the wheels on. Just take a rubber mallet and hit four corners on the tyre keep doing that until it loosens up a bit and wa la wheels come off. If you don't have a rubber mallet use a block of wood and a normal hammer. Hope that helps!!

just boot it..and then when you put your steelies on put some anti seize stuff on it and you'll be set for next time.

Thanks for the tips, boys. I'll give that mallet trick a go.

anti-sieze is the way to go! I've yet to have a problem at all with my wheels, whereas my retarded neighbor spend a good 20 minutes per wheel...kicking at it while the whole side of the car is balanced on one jackstand...

Lol. Yes, make sure the car is supported by more than a single jack before you start reefing on the wheel.

I WD40 each bolt before it goes in, and the hub - haven't had a seize yet on this car.

i only have this problem with my front left, but thats because the hub is a little bent... otherwise, put an extra tire under your car, and kick away, if it falls off the jack, it will have something to land on...

Be careful about lubing the lug nuts.....If you use a torque wrench there is a different torque value for dry and lubed lug nuts.

Shouldn’t lube those wheel bolts. It was never a problem to take those bolts off for me. I guess my Dewalt impact wrench make my life easy. Hehe.

Yeah, I have no problem with the actual lugs - those came off faster than Paris Hilton's pants. It's just the rear wheels are seized up in the hub. I'm gonna take a crack at it tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.

Sidenote: Bart, wanna come over and lay under the car with your hands stretched out to catch it if it should happen to fall off the jack?

A hammer and a block of wood should help.
