Every turbo that is larger spools slower. There is no turbo that will spool close to the K03 and make 300 hp. You are making the same amount of exhaust gasses, so how would a turbo be able to be larger AND spin faster? Its like a windmill, if you want to spin it faster using the same amount of wind you need to make the blades smaller and lighter.

The order I would rank turbos in terms of spool up (guessing, no evidence) is:

    K03/K03 Sport
    K04/SK04
    Super 60
    Small T3/T04 (36-40 trim)
    GT28R
    Med T3/T04 (40-46 trim)
    GT28RS
    Large T3/T4 (50+)
    GT30

This can be changed slightly for each turbo based on whether or not it is ball bearing, the wheel used, and other options you can typically choose at time of purchase.

As you go down this list, you have more potential to make HP in the top end but less potential for HP/Torque in the low end. Drivability VS power. A GT28R or Medium sized T3/T04e or GT28RS are the best compromise between streetability and power. However, the difference will still be very big in when it spools.

If you want your engine to have power down low, either trade it for a VR6 or stay with the small turbo (or get a K04/SK04).

Maybe Chad can add some input since he has the GT28R.

The Neuspeed Super-K04 got a bad rap but I have read from some less Vortex-like owners that it is very good for what it does...

There is also a kit by a company called FBI that is new, and uses a Super 60. That kit would make good low end with a decent high end. Its also really cheap (or so I am told). The disadvantage with this kit is that its fairly "as-is" without much support.

Personally I like some amount of turbo lag. I think its easier to drive if the turbo doesn't come in until 3500+ rpms.

Pretty happy with my gt28r, even though its not at where it could be. Def' more lag than a k-series. But like Kris mentioned, a little lag can be a good thing sometimes. My powerband is a lot more linear than a ko3/o4, but of course doesnt have the low end torque(tires and clutches aint cheap ya know).

Anytime you want to go for a spin Ryan, just let me know.

              Re: Custom turbo work?

If you take a super-60 and ceramic coat the manifold, the turbine, and the downpipe you will see full spool in around 3000 RPM with similar 1000 - 2500 rpm power numbers to the non-chipped k03s. After 2500 it will go in to warp drive.

I think the FBI kit is the one to get these days. They may not have much in terms of 'support' but what do you expect in terms of support? You get parts, you get install instructions and you get a price per HP that you are willing to pay. If you are willing to pay the price for the APR then without question, buy the APR kit.

With anything but a k03s 1st gear becomes nothing but a full workout for the ASR unless you have some big meats and/or a LSD.

                Re: Custom turbo work?

Instead of me posting from a million different PMs and replies, let's just get a BIG list for all the turbo gurus on what kind of turbos we want sourced. As well, I can source any genuine Bosch part (with a part number) and intercoolers by dimension and flow rate. I can also get ahold of custom turbo piping (or have it made for you) and any silicone connectors and clamps.

I also work in a full service shop with all the necessary tools to do ANY work if someone doesnt have a garage or the tools... Only thing we can't do is an alignment on a car (heavy truck shop). But I have oil change pits, hoists, a billion jacks, ramps, etc....

I have my source pricing 5 or 6 turbos. Ill talk to him about hooking up Simon/Blair and then forward the information to them... If he can't be reasonable to Simon, Ill post whatever prices I can get the club and try and find someway to get Simon the profit (if there is any).

Shouldn't you get the profits since you are doing all the work? Or maybe go to the club for shows etc?
