  • Custom turbo work?

I was wondering if anyone on the board has had any experience with Alamo Industries Inc.? They seem to be the only turbo shop in town (RCTS/Reg Rimer just send all their work there but charge the customer triple for anything done), and they are a master distributor in canada for Borg Wagner turbos (read: KKK is now a division of theirs called Borg-Wagner 3k).

Although I won't be doing anything until possibly next July, I'm kinda testing the waters to see if getting a K04 turbo (and gaskets) from them (and buying a 5bar fpr) and having Simon cook me up a new file will be worth it? Or....getting either mine (or a brand new) K03 modified by them to have a thicker shaft ( hehehehe) and possibly a different (Mitsu 16g?) compressor wheel installed? The modified route seems appealing (the reason I say Mitsubishi 16g compressor wheel is because the TAP-modified K03 turbos use it), mainly because it'll do away with that crappy 4mm shaft -- I've had mechanical pencil leads thicker than that.

However, the K04 is a tested and true solution. Either way I go, the SW I want will actually be tuned *down* in boost to about 12psi (0.8bar) because I will eventually slam a frickin massive FMIC in (so with the pressure drop, to get 12psi to the intake manifold, my turbo will probably have to put out 14-15psi).....

Also, I've heard Alex (Derrick's cousin) takes his GTI to some guy in the NE here that is rebuilding a race Porsche and is supposed to be awesome...any other ideas of where to get the install (or turbo mods or purchase) done?

Depending on where you locate the MAP sensor on your FMIC I think that will determine if you need to lower the boost or not. If you put the MAP after the FMIC then the ECU will be seeing the real (manifold) pressure, but the turbo will be working harder.

However, I think if you put your MAP sensor into the line before the FMIC the ECU would be seeing the same boost pressure that the turbo is making, and so it would not make it work any harder. Since your boost gauge comes off the manifold, it will still show manifold presure.

    Just an idea.

I have heard about Alamo from a few people and they seem to be a reputable shop to have turbos rebuilt. I am thinking that if I buy a used turbo I will call them up and see if they will check it to make sure its in good working order.

Don't suppose you know where the stock MAP sensor is? (I haven't the slightest idea, imagine its pre-intercooler) I have the next couple of days off so I might swing by Alamo and price some things out....would you or anyone else be interested in acquiring either a modified K03 or a stock (or maybe modified?) K04? Wonder if they'd do a group buy.....

Pretty sure the stock MAP is on the outlet endtank on the intercooler. So it is reading the pressure of the air after it has been cooled.

I am not really interested in such a turbo but others might be... I doubt they will do a group buy unless you buy like 15 of them LOL.

If I was buying a K04 I would just get it off Vortex, I imagine they will charge a lot locally. If you find out prices I would be curious though.

Give John at GCL Fuel Systems a call. 279-2368. He's outsourcing all my turbo parts... I just gave him part numbers/namebrands and specs of what I was looking for and he hooked me up cheap cheap...

What kind of turbo did you get? And how much?

He's sourcing six different turbo chargers right now for me. I'll let you know what I'm getting -- if I don't sell the car.

if you want pricing, PM me and I'll forward you a copy, along with anyone else who wants one.

He's basically limited to Garrett direct and Bosch direct purchasing, but he slaughter US prices without batting an eye.

(And no, Im not trying to dump EU tuning... If Simon is interested, I can get him setup with GCL and Simon can supply us the turbos!)

Those are 2 different turbos. An RS is worth about 1050US and an R around 750US. Although I suspect Electrofuzz's supplier might be a bit cheaper especially in Canada...

Everyone should note that buying the turbo is not enough to actually install it in your car

As Mr. EU Tuning for still a few days more I think it would be worth looking into getting hooked up with this stuff Mark, if you want to provide some info to me/simon. Thanks

Basically there are dozens of turbos that can make 300 hp. The question is not if you can make that much power but also how early you want your turbo to spool, when in the RPM band you want the majority of the torque, what your price range is, and how you are going to support the turbo with other mods to reach your goals.

Despite the K04 haters on Vortex, 300 crank HP can be made on a K04 (~250ish whp).

I believe that the APR Stage III uses a GT28R, same turbo Chad has, same turbo from the ATP Stage II kit. The RS is its bigger brother, probably capable of 350 wheel although I don't think many people have done it. Next biggest GT turbo is the GT30 which is very large, being used in Stage IV kits.

BillyT on vortex made something like 325 at the wheels on a T3 Super 60 which is the smallest of the T series turbos. Mind you this was with extensive tuning and running the turbo very hard... A Super 60 can be found for $400US or even at a Junkyard.

T3/T04e's are very popular on Vortex. They are like the "big brother" of the T3 turbo, but not as efficient as the GT28R/RS. Sizes go from about a 40 trim which would be the smallest, quickest spooling to a 50 trim which would spool slow and make more power very late in the RPM band. IMO anything larger than a 50 trim T3/T04e is too large, although some Vortexers buy 57's.
