  • Why should I take my wheels off?

Man, we got DUMPED on with snow here in Edmonton. Thank god for the all season Pirellis I've got on my RCs. I swear those things are stickier than my 15s, even in the snow.

That being said, why should I even bother taking these wheels off for the winter? I'm not sliding around on them, the tires work great, car looks better, etc etc etc. Whats the point?

I ran 17" long beaches for 1 winter and it beat them to hell. Now they are my permanent winter wheels because they are too scratched and chipped and corroded to sell.

Winters are much safer especially when its cold. If you are running all-seasons winters will be noticably better. If you are running high perf summer tires, I would say they are probably very dangerous if it gets cold enough.

Yesterday and today in Calgary there was snow but the temerature is only between +4 and -4. The rubber on your tires will get less and less sticky depending on the temerature.

i would never drive any wheel you want to look good in winter... get some 15" steelies and some crappy tire winters and thats a cheap solution or get good blizzacks either way you'll be safer imo

boo bart! horrible decision unless you want to have your wheels repowdercoated in the spring.. think of how much gravel they toss here.. its makes me cringe seeing how only 1 winter with my jetta owned the shiz outta my front end and hood

my rims are the perfect of condition, i will have to send them to italia for refinishing anyway, so we'll see what the winter will do to them.

to be honest, i dont think a thing... driving over rocks will not shoot them up, magically curve them, and force them into the rim... you can take your car, during the summer, go down a gravel road 200km/h and its very unlikely you will get a chip on your rims...

it will most likely happen from cars driving in the lanes beside you... etc, but whatever, we'll see.

If you don't think wheels can be hurt, you should come over and look at my long beaches!

MY longbeaches were trashed when I bought the car... Two have been curbed and three are scratched all to hell - hence, winter wheels with Yokohama all-season tires. Winter tires are like 280 a piece... at least, that's what I heard. I personally havent checked...

Eh, all seasons are good for pretty much nothing, imo. Not very good in the dry, not very good in the wet, and horrible in the snow.

"performance" tires for summer, and some good snow/ice tires for winter is the way to go.

I agree, although if you want to save money, getting an all season that is really really winter-ish is a good idea in Calgary since we have warm winters. Winters don't last so long (especially if you've got a lot of torque).

HHAHAHA kris.. you gotta learn to only max out at 5psi then

i agree and disagree chad.. if your a 'good' driver you can easily manage winters on all seasons.. when i lived out by red deer the roads never got plowed and i always used all seasons and never ditched it once..
but that being said i would now rather drive with 'summer rubber' when its warm and 'winter rubber' when its the shitz

Even the best drivers will benefit from winters.

Since we're on the subject, any recomondations for a good bang/buck winter tire for my gti?

Going to pick up a new set in the next month or so. I'm thinking maybe some kumhos, kw11's?
