  • Lighting problem : (

Hey guys, I'm hoping someone could help me out with a small lighting problem I encountered on my drive to Los Angeles. While driving through the desert between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, my signal lights konked out

Parking, headlights, and brake lights still work. But when I try to use the indicator, there's no response (no amber lights or clicking noise). I thought that it might be a blown fuse, but I checked the side fuse panel and they were OK. I don't think it's a burnt bulb cuz that usually shows up as a fast-blinking indicator. Anyone have any suggestions for a fix???? I called a local VW dealership in Cali but there is a 2 week wait to bring the car in. In the meantime, I'm fighting through 7-lane freeways with no signal lights

turn signal relay hosed? It's built in behind the hazard light button on the center console...

when mine died, it was giving me intermittent signalling before it eventually totally died (and had no signal lights or clicking noise).

      They replaced part # 1J0 953 235 J 01C
      1.8T
      Not quite stock anymore...

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one. Cuz my indicators were flashing intermittently before they went out completely. The hazards don't work either. Is the part you're talking about actually "on" the hazard button? Or is it deep behind the console somewhere? I guess I have no choice but to wait for a VW appointment

And yes Bart, it couldn't have happened in a better place. Rush-hour traffic tonight, I was in the far left carpool lane, and had to move across 6 lanes of bumper to bumper traffic to make my off-ramp

yeah, I'd put money on the relay aswell.....usually the weak point in signal lights...

LOL Don't forget the 3 illegal Mexicans in my trunk

As for the relay, does anyone know how much it would cost and if it's an easy do-it-yourself job?

C-town'er -- I'll check my bill again tonight, but I think the price was around $40Cdn from the dealer. If you can hold off for another day or two, I'll check my Bentley and post some pics of where the thing is.

I'm pretty sure it's built into the hazard light button, because my blinker noise changed a bit with the new relay (and it comes from the center console area) and I'm almost positive the hazard button logo changed a bit too!

I'd say it's a DIY job, as long as you don't mind taking apart some panels I took it into the dealer and I believe I was charged for an hour

Thanks for looking into this Flanders and Bart. Fortunately, I got it fixed this morning Took the ol' girl to New Century VW in Glendale and they warrantied it and fixed it in about 20min. I think I spent more time talking to the salesmen and techs who came out to "check out" my ride LOL

So now I can finally drive around the city without pissing more people off Heading off to Santa Monica for lunch and will try to snap some pics and post them up later.

LOL glad to hear it's fixed!

And I forgot you have the 4-year b2b warranty, so of course it's covered. I totally forgot about that. woo-hoo!
