  • 1990 Jetta GTX?? help...

Hey guys, just wondering what everyones experience with these cars are....Its a 1990 Jetta GTX, 2L, 16V, Recaro interior, p/w, p/s, tilt, sunroof, that minty green colour, and 211K on the clock.....What should this car be worth?? He's asking $2500, but I'm sure I can negotiate him down around 2.....Any quirks?? How many of these are there?? Bonus for 16V?? Thanks dudes.....

other than the color the car sounds pretty dope! Can't go wrong with 16v. Not sure what it should be worth though.

You should talk with Derek (Ginch) from 5th Ave I think he has a GTX and could probably give you some tips but as far as mk2s go they are one of the best.

211,000 Kms on the clock... thats getting up there. I don't think any "quirks" would be an issue mechanically... just wear and tear.

If the car is in good shape, strong compression etc, that is a good buy.

16v's can be expensive to fix though. Thought the early GTX's (89, 90) were 1.8L?

211 isn't "too" bad for 2500 bux depending on body condition. The 16v is nice and they are good cars in my opinion. I don't think there's too much in the way of quirks. I DO know that you have to look out for leaking of the sunroof, and make absolutely sure all the power options work, I'm leary about power options in a 14 year old car, especially after the window regulator went in my Corrado. Also, make sure they did the timing belt. 16v is a low clearance engine meaning the valves will come into contact with the pistons if the belt goes.

Hope that helps. Really it comes down to the feel of the car and the individual selling it, should be able to tell if it's been taken care of.

Good luck, I like those cars!!

Edit: Chad posted while I was writing this, I think he may be right on the 1.8L

              Hey Alex,
I own an 89 GTX and its been a fantastic car so far. I bought it last year for around $4000 an I think I got a great deal on it. She only had 140,000km's on it however and was in completely stock condition. Within the last year of ownership , its been a great car. There's just something about a nicely sorted out MK2 that is awesome. As said above, make sure you do the timeing belt ASAP. Also, get someone that knows 16 valves to tune the car and get her running properly. They are certainly a bit more finicky (sp) than an 8V but also a lot more rewarding if running properly. Parts are also a bit more expensive vs 8V's but again its worth it. If it seems the car is clean and not run down, I would think that is a great price. Hell, the recaros are probably worth $1000. Are they powered by the way? Let me know if you have any questions! The pathfinder has been great by the way!
              Cheers

I definitely agree that for 2500 its a deal as long as the body is okay and it runs.

Thanks, I'll be taking a closer look at it this weekend....I stared it up, and no odd sounds, ticking or knocking that I could hear....I'll take it for a rip, and get a good feel for it, as it would be daily driven by the GF if I get it.......I'll let you know if there is anything else I could ask.......Glad to hear the Pathy is doin well!!!

OK, took a closer look and here's the deal:

211K on the clock, recent (like in months) timing belt, recent (like in year) clutch, no rips or tears or burns or wear marks on the seats, power recaros, 2.0L 16V, tuneup last month with the belt, blows no blue, no puddles, no BBS anymore , newer exhaust, aftermarket CD player, no A/C (?wierd?), underhood VERY clean...

SO, only 2 spots of concern, but not much are:

rust at windshield surround lower border from poor windsheild install, all surface no perforation
rust inside gas door, again, no perforation easy fix....

Inside doors all good, rockers clean, fenders clean, trunk VERY clean, interior in general about 8/10.. He tabled a trade for an 89 Honda Accord with 250K on the clock

Will post pics tommorrow if I'm not lazy....thoughts?

Snatch her up man. The rust is an easy fix and the rest sounds good. It sounds like the owner was up on the maintenance which is the most important thing for a 16V. How much can you get it for? If you decide against it, let me know please because I know someone else that would be interested!

again, he's asking 2500, but I'll start the cash at 2000....sell the accord seperate and use the difference for some rims and a double round grillie and stuff

Please spell it "rimz" in the future.
