  • I'm new to VW. Helpage me!

    Hi all,

New to VeeDubs. Talking a little with Blair and Khyron (aka Geoff) from Beyond.ca...

I'm a former Big Block man. Prior to my '01 Jetta, I had an 81 Olds Cutlass with a 455 V8 and a 70.5 Camaro with a 350. Both cars were 12 second cars and made gobs of horsepower.

    Now, I favor fuel mileage.

Anyways, basically, I know nothing about making my car fast. All I know is what I have seen in pictures from the Show at Stanley Park and what I have seen on the web and in my few trips to C1. I also know the looks I like.

I have a few suggestions from Geoff and Blair but I'm looking for some input. I plan to spend around 5-8k on the car. I'm looking for something that is streetable (this is a commuter, and a winter car).... but can still blow my brothers SRT-4 away. I'd also like to upgrade the suspension without lowering the car too much.

Any info would be great. Im heading to C1 with a little bling in a few weeks and Ill be at the meeting at the 7th. Looking foward to meeting all of you..

    Thanks..

    Mark

Edit: See my post in another thread.

What is really comes down to is whether you have the money. If you go the APR route we're talking well over $10 grand to get started.

If you go custom, you can probably save a bit of money, and maybe get as good as or better of a setup.

The lesser kits are not worth it in my opinion. They are selling you cheap hardware and you will need to do a lot of tuning anyhow. Some of the ATP pieces are okay but usually because of the price not because of any amazing quality.

If you are serious about beating an SRT-4 though, don't screw around with small mods, just save up and go all the way.

turbo upgrade and the usual intake, exhaust, chip mods will be needed to gaurantee good results against a SRT-4

or if you want something reliable that won't require any dinking around, why not spend a bit more and go with the apr stg3 kit. www.goapr.com. Then you can keep up with those big blocks, and wave goodbye when you pass 'em! stg3 + suspension + clutch + front mount intercooler + exhaust = fun fun! 275hp and 255wtq with 93 octane at the wheels, dyno'ed on a car here in Ottawa. (actually, this car was running the stock intercooler...)

Welcome to the crew. If you really want to compete with the SRT you'll need to order an LSD as well (c1 sells them for about 1500). Don't rush, have fun!

Just by having the sense to buy a VW you've already beat the SRT owner.
