I think I'll give the insurance companies "General Inquiries" line a call and ask about ride height/custom mods etc. but I think if they were to deny claims based on the addition of aftermarket parts then there are a lot of vehicles, including some very nice ones on this site that wouldn't be covered or denied a claim.

If you change the springs back to stock and then present the car to the insurance adjuster you are misrepresenting things (my opinion) as that was not how the car was at the time of the accident. I would just leave the car as it was at the time of the damage.

I would say it is not so much of an accident as shoddy workman ship on the road.

Well my wife goes back to get some pictures of the intersection/manhole (no signs anywhere.) etc. and what does she find..... a huge splatter mark and trail of oil. It turns out that someone else has hit the same manhole and busted their oilpan and didn't get to far. They made it to the parking lot across the street according to the trail and puddle.

The manhole isn't that raised after all... it only sets up about 4 inches... but it's the double bumps and uneven road in front of the manhole. It's kinda like bump...bump... manhole. So as your cars on the way down as you are crossing the raised cover. I talked to the city and they said that they will have to see wither the city has control of the area or the developer since the area is still being developed.

If you're going to call them, they'd need to put whatever they say in writing, or record the conversation.

Take it to a tranny shop. My buddy owns Center Street Transmission.

Otherwise, pull the cover off and have it welded with a TIG. Clean and buff the welds and paint the cover.

Have the city pick up the tab. Our shop could do the work.. And I can get you a good rate...

And I forgot, I think you need to notify the insurance company every time you make a modification to the car. Same as house insurance, document what the car has, have it appraised, etc, so that they'll cover it. Otherwise, you just get your stock car back if it's pooched....

My insurance company has the right to up my payments based on my mod list, especially some things such as performance parts and suspension parts. So I tend to keep things a little quiet...

I read the contract and it seems like I might (not definitely) be okay if I keep my reciepts and can prove that the parts were on there if necessary, which should 99% of the time be possible from the wreckage (I think). If the wreckage is really bad then maybe I won't get my money back on some things but that will be the least of my worries!

Hey bro,

I would definitely encourage the weld if other avenues are not working out. In essence, they weld every other inch of our vehicles, and we trust them...and in the machining world, they can send you to the best there is out there. Besides, to most jouneymen, their work is art and they will give you confidence in the good job they do. I used to work for a trade school and some of the people that went through that program were very good at what they did. Good luck!

In essence, they weld every other inch of our vehicles, and we trust them...and in the machining world, they can send you to the best there is out there. Besides, to most jouneymen, their work is art and they will give you confidence in the good job they do. True. I used to take a welding class and if we welded something that wasn't perfect we'd just throw it out... there's a lot of pride and skill in the trade.

I have a few friends in Edmonton that are journeymen machinists. If you are having difficulty finding someone to help you out, just drop me a line or reply on the thread if you decide to take that route...if they can't help, I know they could line someone up who could...or they could give you some insight into gettin' it fixed...

Thanks, but unfortunately it's not just a cracked case. I had it towed to the dealership (insurance company wanted it to go back there) and when they inspected it they found some internal damage also. I was hoping that it was just case damage and I could get away with just having it welded. The insurance company is just taking their time in processing the claim . To top it off, I didn’t realize that the rental car option for insurance, isn’t included in “Full Coverage” so I’m stuck without a car until it’s fixed. My last insurance company had it included so I never even though about checking into it.

I'd be inclined to push them to a rental car if they're not dealing with it quick enough. Remember - you pay them every month, every year!!!

I actually just got off the phone with Northland, and he said that he'll get back to me after the appraiser calls him back with his decision and then I can look at arranging one. He said that it should only be 7-10 days for parts and labour.
