If it's a crack and hasn't expanded enough to cause a problem, I'd get it welded. I did that to an old Impala - 30 buck weld vs a new tranny. Hell when my oilpan cracked my uncle in law was half tempted to weld it and it was cracked all around the drain plug (but for 400 bucks, better to get a new one).

Of course that's assuming you have to pay for it - go after the city like mad - there's no way it should hit your tranny if you are not slammed to the ground. Go with a ruler and measure the manhole before they pave though! Take pics!

Well I talked to my insurance company and they said that it might be covered under collision(full coverage), my question is.. They will want to send an appraiser to inspect the car, will I run into any problems with it being lowered?. Is it worth the trouble of throwing the stock springs back on?

Before Side Angle View... These pic’s were huge so I had to resize them (a little distorted). The also turned out dark... so I lighten them so you could see the difference in height.

IMO your car definitely not really that low, hmm… an inch lowered. I think you have like 4~5 inch ground clearance there. No need to worry too much about the appraiser feeling on your cool car.

Measured at almost a inch and half...I didn't want to go too much lower for now.

If it were I: Time and trouble of original spring reinstall = transmission, or if I weren't I: No time and effort = maybe repaired by insurance co. I wouldn't give them any chance to say no. However, I'd also ask the spring installers to disturb the natural road dust as little as possible.

Yes I'm anal, but I think it's worth the precaution. I'd even follow it up with a request to the moderator to remove this thread....ha ha.

Not worth reinstalling the stock springs- you are def at a legal height. If you were super low I would say reinstall the factory springs. If they give you any problems point out that a Porsche or lambo is lower stock and be glad that they are not replacing a transmission in one of those. Then tell them to fix your car and fix the manhole properly all while shaking your fist and saying “cause if you don't...”

But the car is at a legal height, if it was not I could see them refusing. That is like saying that the law on the height of a vehicle means nothing and that you could be 2mm off the ground or 40 feet off the ground but if your cars scrapes we are not covering either one. The only defense that they have is to say that the manhole was marked and signed if it was then there is no case to get the Trans replaced.

I'm not sure what a legal height is? I am certain that all cars are insured based on their components from the factory, any aftermarket part is an opportunity for a dealer/insurance company to deny replacement/repair.

For me it's not about bravado, it's about getting the tranny fixed.
