If you want swap a 1.8t into a mk2 I heard that you have to use the one out of an older audi not sure of the details but something to do with the transmission. As previous Honda freak and vetran to a few engine swaps I can assure you that the H22 engine swap into a civic that you speak of you friend doing is a cake walk compared to a 1.8t into a mk2. Pretty much any VW engine swap is more complex than a Honda one. Good luck with you choice.
