  • Best cone filter?

I know this has kinda been beaten to death on the vortex but I want the opinions of real people not the magazine racers and flamers there....

Right now I am running my Canadian Tire blue light special ractive cone filter, which give or take is equal to a K&N...sadly for my car, there aren't any true CAI, and I am not shelling out 300.00 for a piece of abs plastic (EVO intake) so right now its bolted right up to my lovely 2.75" stock AEB MAF.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with other cone filters? Foam? (I've heard HKS sucks, but the ITG ones claim to stop more dirt and filter more than any other media). Does the velocity stack in the filter *really* matter? (As in an Akimoto filter)

Yeah, problem is I still want it to be reversible (as in no permanent damage)...plus even with the box cut up, the turbo whistle and dv don't quite sound as loud, and throttle response is better even with my ghetto cone (I've done the swap a couple of times and still my opinion is the same)...

I suppose a real CAI could be fabbed but the amount of twists and bends would kill any benefits, besides the 'snorkel' the stock airbox uses is still there directing fresh air right to the cone...ideally I'd get one of those carbon fiber airboxes (more looks than anything, I mean its even smaller than the stock airbox!)...

Did you see the thread for my airbox mod? There's a 20 page thread on vortex, but after reading everything I decided it was best for me. Doesn't change the sound too much though.

I agree with Geoff, modded airbox. If you want no damage, buy another airbox, they are almost free from people who do cone filters and other mods.

A cone filter would probably be okay too though.

I have an ITG foam cone, and it works great...a little quieter than the cotton cloth style filters like you're running....but I compared the inside metal surfaces of mine to a cotton one, and mine were perfectly clean, while the cotton one had allsorts of crap and dirt in it.....

It may have been a lower quality cotton cone I looked at...it was terrible....I can't remember the brand

Where did you get your ITG cone from? How is it holding up to the heat? (One of the big complaints about the HKS one is it crumbles into nothingness from the underhood heat)...and more importantly, the base of the ITG cone, is it solid metal? (The reason I ask is because I have an ungodly 2.75" MAF and the only way my 3" cone fits on is because I go hercules on it and clamp it like mad)...or does ITG have it in a 2.75" diameter (yeah right, but worth a try)...?

                      Re: Best cone filter?

I had mine mounted underhood with a eurosport cool-flo intake (which is by the way where the filter came from), and had no problems....Yes it is metal based, but I have a silicone coupler to mount it, you'd never fit or tighten a metal base up to the MAF......Its now on the end of an Evo CAI, and still great....

IMHO...not even close in terms of quality.

True that. Piece of crap. So I replaced it with an equally crappy APC one...still waiting for Carbonio to make a carbon fiber airbox for the B5 A4 already...!!!
