There needs to be a general Tech section, not only a performance section.
So I installed the wiper switch this evening.
Tools needed:
t-15
t-25
12mm 12point (like a torx bit)
phillips screwdriver
standard screwdriver
10mm socket
torque wrench (needed to torque steering wheel bolt to 37ft/lb)
blue thread lock (to put on the steering wheel bolt when re-installing)
use instructions at your own risk. buy a bentley manual/cd and read all warnings and instructions!!!
1. use 10mm socket and disconnect ground from battery.
2. remove upper steering column cover (2 phillips screws)
3. remove instrument cluster (2 t-15 screws, 2 electrical connectors)
4. remove airbag from steering wheel (standard screwdriver - need manual for details, 2 spade connectors, and 1 plug-in connector)
5. remove steering wheel (12mm 12-point/multipoint tool)
6. remove lower steering column cover ( 2 phillips screws, and 1 t-25 screw)
7. pull off cam canceller for signal, it also has airbag signals. (held in place by clips)
*** you must be careful putting it back on, make sure it's aligned properly or it will crush when steering wheel goes back on.
Finally
8. pull off wiper switch - note the tab that you will have to press with a screwdriver when pulling
9. remove electrical connectors from switch (2)
installation is reverse
it's easier if the cluster is off, you don't need to take out the cluster if the screwdriver is short enough.
the problem I ran into is my 2002 golf TDI does not have the wiring for the MAF controls.
Only pins 5,6 are populated in the connector, pins 1 - 4 need to be wired in.
Now I need to get some wiring repair kits to run wires from the switch connector to the cluster.
edit - added link for wiring go down 1/3 of the page to m. moore's post
