My problem is that my 3M looks like crap now (old), and if I peel it off I am worried that it will look bad underneath. So I am screwed...

You can take it off no problem. Just pull slowly and at a constant force. Just have some glue remover on hand for after. It will not hurt the paint. The paint will be fine under it.
