Anybody try building their own interface cable? I was checking out some online plans and it seems like with $10 in parts you are good to go....

I can go on and on about the downfalls of using an optocoupler based scan tool but I am a little byist since I work for the company who makes the hardware for ross-tech. Having a 2004 car you might want to get a scna tool with a CAN interface but it is not essential. If you ever want your car scanned let me know, I would love to see what the new TDI sport looks like anywasy
P.S. The shareware of Vag-com doesn't have all that much in the way of features but you can scan and clear codes but it is only $99US to register the old fasion way (the new cables have registration built in).

What kind of a price can you offer for the good cable and the software package?

I think mine was 300 with registration. Has serial and USB so I can use it on any laptop.

$300 Canadian? Where did you get it from? Perhaps we can get a group buy going and score a good price.....

              I want one for < $150

I think you can get the serial cables for < $100 Canadian online.

Might be tough to find USB though. Maybe I can get a used one.

I got mine for a pretty good price. I think it was under $100. I can't remember the name of the manufacturer right now but I'll take a look when I get home. Ryan has the same cable. In fact, he's the one that told me about it. Ryan?

If you want a basic serial one I can get ou one for under $150, it won't come with a software licence though as that price is set by ross-tech and not much we can do about it

He got it from Sensolutions (hehe have to plug the company that fills my plate) we might be able to do a group buy thing but I would have to talk to Martin. Most of the prices are strickly enforced by Ross-tech since that is who we supply to hardware to and he developes the software (which I might add is very very good).

LOL that might be a heck of alot tougher then Most serial to USB adapters don't work all that well so I have been told due to timming issues with certain controllers.

This entire Vagcom thing is very confussing....Plain cable, fancy cable, cable with the dongle, homemade cables, professional made cables but not from Ross Tech. And that's before we get to the software!! I would like to have a combo cable that has USB & Serial connections so that I would never have an issue with connections. I would like the dongle so I would not have the hassle of registering the software. I would like the full version software....Somebody also mentioned something else that the new cars should have "can" interface as well. That's too much brain bending for a Friday afternoon!

Put the bug in his ear and see what he can do for use. Everbody should have one of these units. What exactly does Sensolutions do?

Most computers and notebooks these days don't have serial ports, so there isn't much point in having a serial cable...
