  • Clicking in engine compartment...

How's it goin guys! I just joined but ive been visiting this site frequently as a guest and finally decided to join. But anyways i'll get to the point.

I was racing my friends 240sx and i was in third gear at around 5,500 rpm and i mis-shifted into 2nd gear. As all of you know the rpm just sky rocketed and as soon as it hit the redline at 6,500 rpm i pushed in the clutch. This was my first mis-shift (and a bad one at that) in my car and it added a "clicking" noise to my engine. I took it to my mechanic and he plugged my baby into the computer and got no codes or anything and when i asked him about the noise he just told me it was the valves but i am 100% sure that this noise wasn't there before this incident! I checked the spark plugs/wires everything was perfect and even my car idles normally just that there is a noticeable clicking whenever i drive and as my rev's get higher the clicking speeds up.
One more point that i've recentlly noticed, as i start my engine the "clicking" is somewhat quiter but when i start driving around it gets louder.

All your opinions and suggestions will be appreciated

    Thank you in advance!

    Re: Clicking in engine compartment...

1.8Ts are very "clicky" when running. As in most mechs think it's busted.

Doing a 3-2 misshift puts the engine revs over redline immediately (assuming you're high in 3rd), the gauge just takes time to show - so putting in the clutch didn't save you, luck did. Don't do it again.

Oh and did your mech use a Vagcom or just an OBD scanner? Cause there are specific VW codes that need to be cleared ( one of them says "Over-rev, warranty void" ) - no lie.

No sh!t hey? Can you clear that with a vag-com to the point where the dealer wouldn't know it happened?

should it not have hit the rev limiter first?

NO, lol. the rev limiter is electronic, it will only cut fuel for acceleration. there is no such thing as limiting revs for 'mechanical' incidents. by downshifting in such a manner this overcomes any rev limiter, yes it will probably cut fuel or whatever, but the energy from the wheels at that speed and gearing will still over-rev the engine.

I know i got that code cleared (Over rev, Warranty Void) any ideas wat the clinking could be tho from this incident? Changed oil, spark plugs and same thing, can't figure it out!
