  • Check engine and running really ruff!

Today I was driving my car really hard and all was well, but when I stopped at my friends house I noticed some sort of weird smell kinda like gunpowder. It phased me a little bit but didn't do anything about it. So I leave my friends house and the car is still running great. As I pull into the driveway of my house the car starts to run like s**t. Feels like a freaking lawnmower with that kind of sound, there is tonnes of throttle lag, awful smell and the check engine light came on flashing and now is solid. It feels like the car is running on three cylinders so I assume these are the symptoms of a coil pack that has blown or is my car really f'd?

yes thats your coil pack.. put it back to stock mode and phone NL and get it towed don't drive it..
i thought it was freaking hilarious when mine did it.. luckily it happened like 1km away from northland so it was all good.

You really think I need it towed? Won't that be like 200 bones?

dude thats why we have roadside assistance

but if your close to NL and don't mind driving it in and possibly damaging something and burning tons of fuel cuz it leaks into your exhaust then do it

Again, buying a spare coil is 20 bucks - can keep one in the trunk and change it in 5 mins flat. Or keep dealing with tow trucks... and possibly getting caught on the highway, or a Sunday.......

Re: Check engine and running really ruff!

Ok, took the car to the dealership got the coils replaced np. But now it seems when I fire up the car I get some black smoke possibly oil coming out the rear, it only does it when its semi cold or cold. So I decided to do a compression test to see if it was blow by, my compression was 155, 150, 160, 160. That seemed ok and didn't indicate blow by so I'm now stumpped. Could it have been unburnt fuel from the miss fires when the coil pack blew or do you think the turbo is leaking oil or something? Also after driving it hard its seems that the No.2 Coil pack is jumping out. Does that mean its gotta be replaced again?

                Thanks a bunch

Push it back in. If it pops out again, take it back. And yah, running on 3 cylinders even for a few mins will flood the cat with gas which has to be burnt off.

Re: Check engine and running really ruff!

My #1 coilpack popped out and as a result the plug tip melted. I changed the plug, popped the coil back back in and I haven't had a problem since.

I did go to VW and tell them what happened and told them to put it on my file as I will be less willing to do it myself next time.

I just did a compression test on my engine. 180, 180, 182, 180. Pretty good for 80,000 km with 200+hp

you'll need one of two things:

1 - a nice friend that will lend you a compression tester device thingy.

2 - spend $50-60 at part source to buy a compression tester thingy.

I borrowed one but think I'll buy one.

it connects to the spark plug hole and then remove fuse 32 and crank her over a few times

why so much variance in compression numbers? 150's on one car, 180's on the other? is it variable because of the amount of mods or..?
