  • I'm joining the CEL club too.

Tonight while driving up Deerfoot on my way to dinner the car got a little rough on me and started flashing a CEL. Further along it got REALLY rough but then smoothed out after it cooled a bit. On the way home it got right nasty again; it ran like the 1984 Nissan Diesel truck I bought over the weekend.

It felt a lot to me like a fouled plug. There was zippo power, mis-fires a plenty and it was rough. My first thought was that my 2 ranges colder plugs were a little too chilly and one had fouled with the rain.

Upon arriving home I popped the hood and saw that a coil-pack had popped right off. I thought it best that I should check the plug as well and once I pulled it out I discovered that there was ZERO tip left whatsoever. In fact the center tip was so gone that there was a 2-3 mm impression back in to the plug to where the tip originated. Fortunately I bought a number of extra plugs so I popped a new one in and all appears to be well.

Oddly too it was also down a litre of oil.

On the way home the GF was following me and said the car left quite a stink.

Haunted by the coilpacks, sorry to hear that. The oil thing is strange however. I have been CEL free for almost a year!
I own a luxury econobox..is that an oxymoron?

My Neon and the GTI both take the same plug (stock at least). The Neon, after this round of mods, will be running 11-14.7 psi of boost with a static compression ratio of about 9.9-ish:1 I need to pull heat out of there any way I can.

I bought a whole box of the plugs so I figured I would give them a whirl in the VW.

The VW has only a CAI and a Revo 4 bar in it right now. I have been restraining doing major mods to it as I already have one major money-pit car.

from what i've read they suggest 1 range colder than stock for every 50hp increase dont they? i dont really know who "they" is, but its worked great for me.

I have heard that too, but it's different under boost as your cylinder temps go a lot higher, however when the engine is cold your risk of fouling is also much higher.
