  • help....

so my friendly mechanic tells me that i need new rotors, pads and calipers for front and rear and then quoted me 1450 for parts and install....(it wasnt going in reverse because the rear pad blew and pieces of metal were blocking the turning of the wheel)..is that reasonable? and also...if im gonna spend the money, i might as well get some good quality parts....does anyone have any good suggestions

excuse me while i go drown my sorrows in some exceptionally stiff drinks....

They sell an aftermarket setup that might be an option.

www.ecstuning.com select your vehicle and then you can check brake setups.. the OEM ones for you car seem not to pricey.. i don't really know much about mk3 brakes though.. and why do you need new fronts?

That quote is insane at most parts should cost you about $ 700 and that's for performance stuff ( drilled rotors and perf pads) It is definatly not another 700 in labour! A full brake job with parts should come in at about a G give or take a $100. Just out of wonderment what shop was this?

Well I want to learn how to do brakes so I'd be up for a mod day for them if there are others who are interested.

I can't see why you need new calipers on all 4 wheels - even rotors should be ok as long as they aren't warped. Go ask northland to price out the stock oem rotors, pads and 2 rear calipers (have to do both) and see what that comes out at before looking at performance stuff. I would also check crappy tire and see if they carry mk3 gear. And you can make a bleeder yourself - I saw instructions on vortex.

PERFRECT! Rachal, I need to put in (and by "I", I mean someone else in the club ) my new Brembo rotors. I'd really like to learn how to do brakes as well. Anyone up for a "brake mod" day on Saturday? Brent offered to help put mine in but I think he's been drafted into the war cuz I haven't seen him post in a while.

Oh yeah, the $1450 is a load-o-crap BTW

                    Re: help....

I can buy the tools (because I seriously want to do my own in the future) - so a caliper spreader and bleeder will be bought. I'm seeing 200 bucks a pair for nice rotors, 60 bucks for pads and probably 150 for rear calipers. So 700ish assuming your mechanic friend is correct in saying you need all 4 rotors (which seems really odd).

You might want to limp over to a dealer and get a 2nd opinion about what needs to be replaced for sure, then buy the parts and let us have a whack at it.

I am sure we could figure out how to assemble brakes I would be willing to give it a go at a mod-day!

I definitely think that it should be possible to get the parts WAY cheaper. You can doubtless pull some used calipers off a Mk3. Perhaps Montgommery Auto Parts could hook you up. Then put on some aftermarket or OEM rotors (whatevers cheaper). A rotor is a rotor pretty much. Even cheap no-name pads if you want to save cash.

Definitely call Montgommery about the calipers and compare the price to OEM.

I think that we have all the tools down here at my house, but I have no idea when we can get my garage back. I think we would need someone with the know how, as my dad would probably let us into the garage, but I don't know if he would be willing to help (do) it.

                          Re: help....

If you guys have never replaced a caliper before I wouldn't do it for my first brake job. It's way trickier than it looks/ you think it will be. Plus there's a lot of little things to remeber like when you bleed the brakes the ignition has to be on because she has abs. Plus if you are in there you might as well go stainless lines all round and replace the ebrake cables as well. Which is quite a bit of work.

My neighbour got a similar story on his 2001 Golf. The dealership cornholed him just under $1,000 for rotors, pads and calipers (on the rears only) after a mere 50,000 KM.

I showed him a couple sites that had performance packages that came to far less than that even with labour factored in and he nearly flipped.

                              Goddamn shady shops.
