  • Quality of Mk 5

I was reading this month's Top Gear Magazine, and it has a buyer's guide for all the 2004 cars in it. One thing I found interesting is that they warn that the quality for the Mk5 is worse than the Mk4. This is somewhat disappointing since the Mk4 is kind of known for quality issues. I am not sure what quality actually means in this case, but nonetheless I was not encouraged.

like what kind of quality issues.. IMO the later Mk4s are rock solid.. and it the MK5 first year with new engines, etc so i can see issues coming up. but if its interior/build quality that is quite sad becaue the mk4 interior (with leather) is amazing and very high end

I am not speaking from experience just from magazine articles I have read, often the Mk4 is said to have issues because of a few early recalls etc.

Hmmm, well maybe it would be a good idea to wait a few years, then get one that has most of the bugs worked out.

You think VW would learn. I love my MK4 and all, my the fact that it rattles like a tin can is starting to get to me. I'm going to spend one day this week removing the door panels and part of the dash, and maybe re-tightening everything.... or placing a thin strip of felt in areas that rattle. It's a frustrating thing, that takes away from the beauty of the car.

Then I guess your really lucky Ryan. I have back seat rattles..... dash rattles from around the stereo and the vents. Rattling from the top of the door where the window meets the door, and also in the bottom of the door by the speakers. Even my stinkin seat rattles/squeeks sometimes. I guess thats what I get for having uber stifff suspension :(

Well yeah, if you change out the suspension, you have to expect things to rattle a bit on ANY car.

Oh i totally agree... but this is pretty ridiculous. My friend had an MK2 GTI with extremely stiff suspension and it never rattled much. My old car had new suspension and never rattled much. I love my Jetta, but this is just one of those things that gets to me. But hey.... that's life
