  • Engine hesitation....help?

Hey guys, I seem to be getting some weird responses to quick acceleration lately. Every once and a while when I punch it.....not every time ( the strange part ) It hesitates almost like a studder.....to trys...bogs trys bogs then takes off....does this make any sense....any comments. I am driving an 2003 1.8t.

umm possibly ESP but you'll know for sure cuz the light flashes.. coilpacks might be going.. MAF might be dirty.. you could use a throttle body alignment which i can do for you this weekend

ESP is a very good guess. Clutch slip?

I thought maybe the ESP the first time but I have never noticed the light flashing, and no clutch...no clutch slip. I'm taking it in for a quick look over this weekend, I'll let warrenty cover any and all problems.......but thanks for the ideas........wait a minute spare my ignorance what are coilpacks??.....MAF?? Thanks for the offer Ryan got to work all weekend in the Hat.

MAF - mass airflow sensor..after the airbox or intake it measures incoming air to adjust fuel, etc
coilpacks little dealies that sit on your spark plugs to help spark them and makes a cleaner spark or soemthing like that

The coil packs don't just make a cleaner spark - they make the spark period.

A coil-on-plug design (such as the 1.8t's have) do away with silly things like a distributor, spark distribution block, and spark plug wires.

They also make getting a good tach signal on the dyno a real bugger.

How long have you had your 1.8t? Have you driven it in warmer more humid weather such as we are having now? A nasty thing about warm weather and turbos is that the added heat of the air makes them a little sluggish if you have been standing still, moving slowly or have been going hard for a while. This effect is amplified if you aren't using premium gas and will also become very noticable once we get some 30+ degree days.

Interesting! I have had the car since Sept. 03' I guess it never really has seen any warm weather. It is only in the last month that I have noticed the hesitations and only maybe three or four times. So with this warm air idea....does the imfamous CAI help the situation, or is it still just basically good for making the car sound good?? Seems funny I have been tossying around the idea of looking for a VR6, instead of the 1.8T.....Not Sure though...

I have a CAI on my GTI and the effects of heat soak have not been as noticable as they were on my 2000 Passat (weaker engine, heavier car). I would not advocate spending that kind of cash on a CAI simply to reduce heatsoak though.

A VR6? Nah, don't bother. I had a meeting with a VR6 Jetta last night on Deerfoot and kept nicely ahead of him without even having to go WOT. All I have for mods is a CAI and Revo 4 bar.
