Killer Pot Holes

Well I knew it was bound to happen to me at some point... guess today was my day. I was driving south on Centre St. and there is this MASSIVE pot hole by a man hole right before 6th Ave SW. Well I hit that son of a ***** and it destroyed my tire. I don't know if my rim is bent or not, it doesn't look like it, it seems to still roll ok on the car (it wasn't until 15 minutes later that I realized something was wrong). My tire has a sidewall puncture.

Does anyone have any experience with getting the city to pay for such things? I mean, there was no signs, pylons, anything that gave any indication that there was this HUGE hole in the road. It will probably cost me $500 or more (1 new Michelin Pilot Sport 225/40/18 plus mounting, balancing, etc.)

Any help anyone could give would be great.

Same thing happened to Ozzie a while back. A protruding manhole ripped into his oilpan. After contacting the city, they sent a guy to the scene and he measured the manhole's height etc. They said it was still under regulation height

I would think that since there were no signs or spray painted markings on this hole you hit, that you have a pretty strong case against the city. Only way to find out is to give them a call. Take pictures like a mad man too

I'm not positive, but I think the city has to have it 'reported' first. If someone else has called them more than 24hrs before your accident, then they have to pay. This is what someone on vortex was talking about (I think it was in Quebec) but it's worth a call to the city. Let us know what happens.

Ouch that sucks, if it isn't marked then you should be able to get it fixed, if they are paying for it, I would go for a new rim, just to be safe. I believe there is a number in the blue pages of the phone book.

yea for sure bill the city should pay for that crap.. your car is stock specs,etc so right there is huge leverage for them to have to pay you..

I lost my oilpan to a pothole (500+), and got 4 bent rims on another pooly marked construction rut so I know how much it sucks. I'm also pretty sure it has to have been reported before you hit it (they are only liable if someone reported it and they didn't bother to get someone out to mark it).

I lost my oilpan to a pothole (500+), and got 4 bent rims on another pooly marked construction rut so I know how much it sucks. I'm also pretty sure it has to have been reported before you hit it (they are only liable if someone reported it and they didn't bother to get someone out to mark it).

Bill, why don't you have a friend call the city to report it tomorrow. Then you can make your complaint the following day

well seriously though how do they expect people to report them.. like probably the people reporting them are the people in bills situation who just hit the damn things..

Thanks for the advise guys. I just went back to have another look. I guess it's not really technically a "pothole". Have a look at the pics below... it looks like the city was working on this section of road (obviously they were because the concrete is cut in a perfect triangle). They fill they put in there is all out on the road so there is like 6 inch holes where the gravel used to be. I would think that this is the cities fault - their repair was not done properly or completely, and there are no road signs whatsoever saying anything about it.

There is more then enough info in those pictures to take the city to the cleaners Good call on the measuring tape with the pics. Since you are stock height they have a lot of answering to do.

Brutal to hear about that, man. I hope you can get it sorted with the city. Let me know if I can do anything to help. I'd be glad to call and make a complaint tomorrow so that you can call the next day and report it.

Absolutely call them up, the shape of the hole doesn't help either, being as the tire contacted at an angle possibly causing a tearing in the tire.....I had a cop chip my windshield, I found out after that I could have held the city liable......Oh, and another big nasty one to look out for, on corwfoot circle, bside the safeway gas bar, there is an oilpan ripper (you can see the gouges in the pavement!!), even swallowed the ambulance! Sorry to hear that bill, pursue it!
