  • rear outter tie

I have a friend whos sister just picked up a newer Cabriolet and when she took it to get the car inspected they told her that the rear outter tie was in pretty rough shape. The dealer replaced the part for free (warrenty) but he asked me what that says about the car? What could have caused the rear tie to break? I wasnt even sure what the rear tie does, I think its the bar that holds the suspension towers together but I wasnt sure. . . And even then, I didnt know it had an outter or inner tie . . . so confusing. Anyways, can you guys lemme know what this means about the car?

    Thanx

    Vague reply:

Suspension parts sometimes break from hitting things. Potholes, curbs, walls, giant rocks left by the city, pedestrians. Three of us have had problems with the front (Me, Bart, Simon D) on our Mk4's. I think I probably hit a pothole at high speeds, it messed up my ball joint or steering knuckle or something. Anyhow, hitting something would be my guess, without knowing what "Rough Shape" actually means?

[QUOTE=Cedrick] rear outter tie/QUOTE] What come again?? I have never heard of a rear outer tie? Tie rod? since when did we have rear steering? I have no idea what that is but I would sure would get them to point out to you and explain to you what is wrong with it. Best way to not get ripped off by any mechanic is to ask lots of questions and make it look like you know what you are talking about without saying anything, it makes them nervous if they are trying to rip you off.
PS It means the car had a bad part
