So last Sunday night it was snowing pretty good up here in Edmonton. It had been raining earlier, but by the time this happened it was just snow. I was driving home on the Whitemud, only doing about 60-70 km/h because the roads were so crappy. I take my off ramp and come to a stop at the light. When the light turns green I step on the gas and there is this god awful rumble from the engine bay. Kinda sounded like a hole in the muffler, except it was definitely coming from the front of the car and there was a pretty good vibration associated with it.

Anyway, I crawl/coast up to the next light which was pretty close since it's an overpass interchange thingy. Rev the engine a little bit again. The sound is maybe a little softer but definitely still there. The sound and vibration also seemed to lessen above 2500 RPM or so. Anyway, I crawl up to the next light and this time when I get there it's pretty much gone. Never had the CEL come on or anything. The car has been fine since.

I'm think that maybe there was some ice/snow buildup somewhere while cruising on the Whitemud, and it melted away while sitting at the lights, but where would it build up to cause that sort of noise/vibration?

    Opinions?

In the wheel well. I have mud flaps and I've had huge hunks of snow/ice build up there, and when you turn your wheels rub the ice making an aweful noise. Then the ice breaks off and it's gone.

Don't think that's it. It made the noise when I was sitting still and revving the engine a bit. Definitely something in the engine bay as far as I can tell.
