  • How to check Engine codes (AWD, AWW)

Hi everyone, where is the engine code stamped so it can be seen? I'm helping a friend potentially buy a MKIV but he wants the bigger turbo in-case down the road he decides to chip it.

    Thanks.

thanks, i'm really just interested in 01's because some of them had the bigger turbo and i want to know how to tell which one it has.

I'll search around and see what i can find.

I don't care too much about 150 vs. 180hp, because as long as it has the bigger turbo, once it's chipped it's all the same.

          From the faq:

          AWD - 2000 model year on golf/jetta/gti
          AWW - 2001 model year on golf/jetta/gti/wolfsburg
AWP - 2002 model year on golf/jetta/gti/337(yes its the same engine)

A little table and some more useless info.

Eng Code Compression Exh. Dia. Turbo Stock Boost Timing
          AWD 9.5:1 55mm ko3 0.6bar No VVT
          AWW 9.3:1 50mm ko3/ko4 0.6bar VCT
          AWP 9.5:1 55mm ko3/ko4 0.8bar VCT emmis

Looks like you want to avoid the AWD (Poor Simon).

I'm pretty sure the AWD -> AWW switch was part way through the 2001 model year. Some 2001 have AWD, some have AWW.

AWD is the best engine for big turbo applications, thanks for coming out though.

Key part there: for big turbo applications - so until you get a big turbo application, we get to bug you.

VVT only improves emmisions, correct? No performance benefits?

Oh, and the engine code should be stamped on the top of the engine.

Yes, on the passenger side of the top.

Its actually variable cam timing, not VVT like you see on honda engines and such. And yes, its only for emissions purposes.
