  • Touareg, looking for personal opinions.

Toying the idea around of replacing my current suv with a Touareg, I wouldn't be buying new but it would be the 2ed gen one I know that much. I'm wondering if anyone here has one and how they are liking it, I'm not one that changes vehicles often and normally drive them for awhile. I'm currently driving a '03 Pathfinder which I got with 50,000kms and closing in on 230,000kms so that would give you an idea as I'd be keeping it awhile. Had an '02 Jetta 1.8T and the wife has '10 Golf which we really enjoy. Any advice would be great, thanks in advance.

I have a 2014 TDI Execline. Reliability wise, it's been great. I guess that's where my love ends. The seats make the top of my butt numb, and I'm not the only one to experience that. I much prefer my wife's Q5. Nicer interior (although treg touch screen is better), seats more comfortable, faster. The SQ5 is shortlisted as a replacement for the Treg once I get my "I'm sorry" money. So would I do it again....no.

My mom bought an 09 Touareg 2 VR6 in 2010. Thing has been absolutely rock solid mechanically. It blows through alot of tail light bulbs and curve lighting bulbs which is kind of annoying but a minor complaint for how awesome of an overall SUV it is, especially for the price you can pick one of them up for nowadays.

MY parents had a 2006 VR6 Touareg (1st gen) and now have 2014 Touareg execline VR6. Both have been extremely reliable.

My wife has a 14 TDI Ex R-Line, we have had it 2 years now and it is a beast. We bought it for its towing capabilities and have been very impressed. Last year we drove the PCH towing our trailer and the Touareg handled 15,000km pulling with ease.

If you are looking for a new SUV - I've never owned a Touareg and so I wouldn't feel like I knew what I was talking about to comment on them. But we bought a Lincoln MKC about a year ago and it's been the perfect SUV. Almost 300hp under the hood from the mustang's ecoboost engine, and it's pretty luxurious inside - not as nice as an Audi or BMW but if you like VWs I think it holds up. The price was also negotiable down to what I would call insanely good - Lincoln is begging for customers. Downsides - it has a tow hook but tow capacity isn't huge.

Thanks for info thus far. Something else that I should had said it when it comes to bells and whistles that not something that I really need or care for I'm a pretty basic type of driver. My one key requirement is that it can tow a travel trailer well, but I don't need the room to fit a bunch of kids...lol Trying to stay away from the larger/full size units, the only other one that interests me is a 4Runner. I'm not a huge fan of the 5 gen body styling really like the 4th which would be ok if I can fine one with the right kms.

Girlfriend and I went down this route in replacing her 15 Golf, with a midsize SUV; towing capacity, aesthetics, as priorities. Used >$30k/100km. Ruled out, variants from Subaru, & Nissan (aesthics/size)

                Further, ruled out
Ford, Lincoln, Audi, due to poor towing. Q5/Lincoln/Ford, use a turbo'd 2 liter. Love that in my cars, not so when needing low RPM torque.
Even ruled out the Infinity FX50, while having a big V8, isn't built to tow.

                Left us with
                Touareg
                4Runner
                Grand Cherokee

Touareg, tough to find decently priced low mileage, recent examples (some apprehension into reliability too, considering the first gens problems)
4 Runner?, exponentially more difficult to find. It's hilarious even, to learn what the 4Runner used market is like. Unbelievable following, and resale value. V6 for towing, wasn't mind blowing either.

Thus, we've settled on a Grand Cherokee Overland. My first thoughts, were it's a FCA --- crappy Dodge. Well turns out, that and their trucks are what's carrying that brand.
Pretty decent interior, the V8's tow well. Pretty nice creature comforts.

Hope I help some in your direction.

My wife's Grand Cherokee is an awesome vehicle so I think you've made the right decision (IMHO), I love the look of the new gen Touareg but I still dont think it would out perform the GC. The only bad part of the GC, or good depending on what side of the equation you stand on, they are plentiful so they are relatively easy to find a good deal on...and then again this doesnt help the resale value. Another bonus to the supply side of the coin, if you plan to keep it for many years from now you are almost always garenteed to have a plethora of parts available to you.
