help:axle spring clip

I am replacing an axle on my Passat and for the life of me can not get the new axle in, the spring clip that holds the axle into the transmission is not letting the axle seat, is there some kind of trick to get these in? I tried to put axle in with out clip and it slid freely in so I know the axle actually fits.

We have seen sometimes the clips get gnarred up and can prevent the axle from going in, also you can sometimes get burrs in the splines that will hit on the clip and stop it from sliding in.
