    Re: 2018 Volkswagen Atlas

Our colleagues at The Truth About Cars had the opportunity to chat with a member of Volkswagen’s design team during the Los Angeles Auto Show where the Atlas made its debut. He was partially responsible with the large SUV’s styling, but he expressed his disappointment in regards to how the final design has turned out.

When asked by TTAC what does he think about the Atlas’ exterior, his response was rather shocking: “It’s boring. Of course it’s boring.” He went on to specify “that vehicle is four years old. And by that, I mean it looks four years old.” He didn’t stop there with the surprising statements, adding “it looks like a 2012 Ford whatever. It could be anything.”

His responses are the exact opposite of what Volkswagen is saying about the seven-seat SUV, calling the Atlas the “boldest vehicle ever sold by the brand in America.” Not only that, but VW mentions the Atlas represents what American families want and its design and size are the result of an analysis to make sure the model ticks all the right boxes in United States.

Although it was created primarily for the U.S., the Atlas will also be sold from 2017 in China where it’s going to be called “Teramont” and will look virtually the same. In addition, the company has already announced the Atlas will also be available in Russia with a diesel engine, while some European markets are also being considered.

Pricing isn’t out yet, but it will be more expensive than the yet unreleased seven-seat Tiguan, but cheaper than the more upmarket Touareg. The latter is set to receive a new generation by the end of 2017, although the U.S. version will probably arrive at some point in 2018.

Meanwhile, the MQB-based Atlas is scheduled to go on sale in United States next spring and will be made at the Chattanooga, Tennessee plant where the U.S.-spec Passat is also being assembled.

      Re: 2018 Volkswagen Atlas

Volkswagen's highly anticipated 2018 Atlas crossover is finally here – we saw it for the first time just a couple of months ago at the Los Angeles Auto Show. And while the new CUV won't go on sale in the U.S. until the Spring, Volkswagen is already offering a look at what's next for the Atlas: an R-Line trim, with sporty-ish visual cues inside and out.

Available on the SE and SEL models, the R-Line pack adds unique front and rear bumpers, new side skirts, and 20-inch wheels. Inside, the upgrades are limited to a small R clip on the steering wheel, stainless steel pedal covers, and a fancy R-Line logo that displays on the infotainment screen upon startup.

Because it's an appearance pack offered on two models, buyers can get the R-Line treatment with either the four- or six-cylinder engines, and with front- or all-wheel drive. The four-cylinder model makes 235 horsepower and only comes with front-wheel drive, but opting for the 3.6-liter V6 nets you 276 hp, and the option to add AWD capability.

It's unclear exactly how much the R-Line package, since we don't have pricing for any Atlas models just yet. Expect that to be revealed closer to its launch this spring, with the R-Line option being added later this year. We'll be able to see the Atlas R-Line in person at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show next week.

          Re: 2018 Volkswagen Atlas

Volkswagen says the key to its future success in the U.S. lies on crossovers and SUVs, not to mention winning back the trust of the American public. This year, the highly anticipated Atlas will arrive, as will the long-wheelbase Tiguan – a vehicle that just debuted this weekend as part of the Detroit Auto Show festivities. The Atlas will go on sale first, this spring, and Volkswagen confirms it will cost $30,000.

That'll be for the base Atlas, with front-wheel drive and the 2.0-liter turbo-four engine. We don't have specific pricing details just yet, but Volkswagen officials say a fully loaded Atlas will top out around $48,000 – that's an SEL with the V6, all-wheel drive, and all the other goodies. That said, we aren't sure if that includes the new R-Line trim – another vehicle that debuts as part of the 2017 Detroit Auto Show.

Following the Atlas and Tiguan, Volkswagen says two new utility vehicles will arrive in the U.S., and all four will be on the market by 2020. One safe bet is the next-generation Touareg, and the second SUV will likely be something smaller, to slot below the now-three-row Tiguan.

Volkswagen also says electrification is a huge part of its future in the U.S., and that'll likely extend to its crossover and SUV lineup, as well. We're getting a glimpse of VW's electrification strategy by way of the new I.D. Buzz Concept this week in Detroit, but of course, a futuristic Microbus is probably very far off in terms of production feasibility.

              Re: 2018 Volkswagen Atlas

That's a pretty decent price for a large SUV.

30k for something as large as this? Great price but Im predicting a lot of gross plastics and poorly built.
