  • Bringing in a car from the USA

So I'm looking into importing a mk7 golf.
It doesn't seem to be a hard process but it is time consuming! Also you have to do everything in the right order or it delays you.

First before buying a car always check with Carfax/Carproof/Autocheck/Vincheck

Important consideration: you have to pay GST on all vehicles, PST/HST if applicable, $100 AC, and also the Green levy for vehicles with poor fuel economy - this one can be up to $4k!

Here are the steps as best I understand them, this is what I did but it can change anytime:

1 - Make scanned copies of your license & passport - you will need a package of documents that are scanned to do this process and these are the first 2 required.

2 - Find a car and check it is in the list of admissible vehicles:
    https://www.riv.ca/VehicleAdmissibility.aspx

3 - Check that there are no active recalls on the car (go to the USA manufacturer website and use their VIN recall check) and save the document/webpage - if there are recalls you need a letter from the manufacturer on official letterhead stating that they have all been done, or invoices/receipts proving it - add to your scanned package. (www.vw.com/owners-recalls/)

4 - Check that your insurance company will insure it in Canada after import/repair

5 - Find a place to store the car near the border crossing and book it for a week or two

6 - Buy the car - scan the sale confirmation so you have the price before taxes and shipping!

7 - Insure the car for driving it over or transport if possible (Canadian insurances will not cover a salvage vehicle during transport)

8 - Get the car shipped to the storage place

9 - Get the seller to scan the car's title & and bill of sale and mail the originals to you via registered mail. (or pick them up in person)

10 - Find a broker to do the AES for vehicle export from USA - non-residents must use a broker (you need the scanned documents for this) (it takes a min of 3 days after filling out the form) (I used these guys, good price and quickly done! links: http://simplifiedtradesolutions.com/...-requirements/)

11 - Fill out the Canada Form1 for import (you need all the scanned documents for this) [I]https://www.riv.ca/OnlineForms/Home/Landing[I]

12 - Email the Vehicle Export Worksheet to USA border crossing (each crossing has it's own unique forms/process) - lookup the contact info here: https://www.cbp.gov/contact/ports
You need to submit the form 72 hours before taking the car across the border.

13 - Call both Canadian border and USA border services verify with them that you have all the required documents.

14 - Get a Canadian temporary permit/plate, if you can't get one you need to move it with a trailer - but make sure that all 4 wheels are off the ground! (you can easily rent a truck+trailer from uHaul for a day)

15 - Wash the car thoroughly inside and out and check for anything hidden inside like drugs, plants, food, weapons or firearms - VERY important - you are the liable owner now!

16 - Bring the car to the border

    17 - Pay duties & fees

18 - If required get it repaired and get the salvage inspection - You only have a short amount of time to do this and pass or else the car will be declared parts only!

19 - Get it inspected out of province (you may need to get modifications done to pass)

    20 - Drive it!

      Same question....
They might be cheaper but is it worth it?
Will you need to get DRL on it?

Pretty sure the new American VWs all have DRLs from the factory now, but I could be wrong there.

Another question - are we talking new, used, damaged..?

Damaged. I tried to find one locally but no go. Even with exchange rate it was worth it (so far).
Damage seems to be rear drivers door only.

If that damage it to the point of writing it off you could run into some issues at the border.

I don't see a benefit either. Remember to factor in time off work, flights, food, hotels, etc depending on where you are picking this car up. I brought a car up many moons ago when to dollar was on par. and it was a process, but back then you could make a few bucks by bringing a car up, getting it registered and selling it after a summers worth of use. How much money are we talking about you saving compared to buying locally??

And you will need an out of Country inspection, if I remember correctly, I had to have Canadian tire do that for me.

Re: Bringing in a car from the USA

                      Car price in BC for similar used vehicle is $26,000 + $500 dealer fees + 5% GST + 7% PST = $29,680

I estimate after all repairs and inspections etc, I will be in for about $17,000-$18,000 on the import (highest case scenario).
I have a quote for $1,500 for the repairs required - may go up to $2,000 depending on how bad it is.

                      Seems OK to me.

I did this a few years ago and its not that hard.

I hired Hansens and they do this all the time. They actually picked up the car for me from the buyer, scanned the docs, loaded and shipped the car, took care of brokering, and got the car across the border for me.

Basically they dropped it off at my house.

I'd consider using them again for sure. It was $2400-ish to ship the car all-in from Florida.

I am surprised, and not starting an argument or saying what you are doing is wrong as I am only curious.

How is it that a person (or even an insurance company) will let go a $10,000 to $15,000 car involved in a fender bender (under $2,000 to fix a recent car doesn't cover that much...) without fixing it?
I mean I heard fixing cars in US is cheaper than here (I could be wrong on that too....).

Otherwise, I understand that saving about $10,000 or more on a car you want is really worth some of your own time.

The quote for repair was $9k from the dealership. The car in USA is priced at $24k. No idea why even at that point it was let go instead of being fixed.

I understand I'm taking a gamble here, could be $20,000 in hidden problems, one thing in my favour is the bodyshop quote is from a friend's brother, which reduces the price a bit.

Pictures in photobucket of the car with damage (click picture to open).

Is there supposed to be that massive gap around the trunk? Seems like it is popped out to me :/

EDIT: Wait, the whole rear quarter is massively crumpled....you can see it running all the way up to the roof. No way is that going to be $2k to fix.
EDIT EDIT: I'm still looking at it, it looks like they are going to have to pull and/or replace nearly that entire side of the car. This is going to be more around that $9k mark that the US dealership was quoting i bet....
