Volkswagen is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Golf GTI by introducing the new Golf GTI TCR.

Jointly developed by Seat and Volkswagen Motorsport, the model is a customer racing car that is designed to compete in the TCR International Series. Given its purpose, the model has been equipped with an aerodynamic wide body kit that includes a new front bumper, a ventilated hood, and extended wheel arches. The body kit also includes revised side skirts and a sporty rear bumper.

Since the car was designed for racing, it has been outfitted with a number of aerodynamic styling tweaks including a carbon fiber front splitter and a carbon fiber rear wing. The model also rides on 18-inch racing wheels wrapped in Michelin tires.

Volkswagen didn't have much to say about the interior but the automaker confirmed the Golf GTI TCR has a roll cage and a racing seat with head protectors.

Power is provided by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 330 horsepower and 302 pound-feet of torque. It is connected to a six-speed sequential racing transmission which has steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. This enables the car to accelerate from 0-62 miles per hour in approximately 5.2 seconds before hitting a top speed of roughly 143 mph.

Besides the upgraded engine, engineers installed an adjustable suspension, a revised steering system, and a high-performance braking system with discs that measure 14.2 inches up front and 12.2 inches in the rear.

In a statement, Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito said “The Golf GTI TCR allows customer racing teams to partake in reasonably-priced motorsport with a Volkswagen. We are providing them with a car that is ideally suited and prepared for this purpose: the Golf has not only made an outstanding impression at tests, but also shown its great potential in competition."

Volkswagen will only build twenty Golf GTI TCRs this year and all the models have already been spoken for.

Looks cool. I kind of wish the Golf R had a few more subtle body mods (wider fenders, deeper front bumper etc) so that it stood out a bit more than it does!

Obviously this is a limited example track car but it would be nice to see the look influence some mods for the R and GTIs, so someone can truly get more whores

The car looks great, and I agree Derek, needs more of this on the MK7 R's.
