  • 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the all-new Tiguan compact crossover, ahead of tonight's premiere at IAA in Frankfurt.

We've seen it in plenty of spy photos and teasers, but now it's finally here in production form and as you can see it's a substantial departure in terms of styling compared to the outgoing model. The vehicle's exterior was previewed earlier this year by the Cross Coupe GTE , so the sharpened up design shouldn't come as a surprise, especially since all recent VAG models have adopted this look.

Despite being 60 mm longer and 30 mm wider, the new Tiguan has lost more than 50 kg (110 lbs) and now it sits 33 mm lower. It's not bigger just on the outside as the wheelbase has been stretched by 77 mm to 2,681 mm, so it offer superior room inside the cabin, with 29 mm additional rear knee room while the trunk's capacity has been boosted by 145 liters to 615 liters or 1,665 liters if you fold down the rear seats.

The all-new Tiguan rides on the familiar MQB platform and will be available with eight turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines, all meeting Euro 6 regulations and up to 24% more efficient than in the previous model. There are four TSI engines with 125 PS (92 kW), 150 PS (110 kW), 180 PS (132 kW) and 220 PS (162 kW) along with four TDIs developing 115 PS (85 kW), 150 PS (110 kW), 190 PS (140 kW) and 240 PS (176 kW). Except for the base engines which all work exclusively with a FWD layout, the others can be teamed up either standard or optional to a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.

The 4MOTION-equipped Tiguan features fifth-gen Haldex coupling and has a 11 mm increased ground clearance (at 200 mm) while an optional off-road front end package boosts the approach angle from 18.3 to 25.6 degrees.

Volkswagen says they have engineered the Tiguan for trailer loads of up to 2,500 kg (5,511 lbs) and as you would expect from a recent VAG product it comes packed with safety & assistance systems such as: Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Lane Assist – all of which are standard.

As far as the interior is concerned, the new compact crossover from Wolfsburg doesn't stray away too much from the Golf and comes as standard with a 5-inch monochrome touchscreen display on the entry-level Trendline. Those who upgrade to the Comfortline and Highline trims will be able to enjoy a color 5-inch screen while several bigger 8-inch displays are also available and support navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLink and many other services. The all-wheel drive Tiguan also gets a 4MOTION Active Control switch located on the center console and provides four selectable modes: Onroad, Snow, Offroad and Offroad Individual.

The white car depicted in the attached images is the higher specification R-Line which brings 19-inch Sebring wheels (20-inch optional), many body-colored surfaces, sportier front and rear bumpers, two-tone roof spoiler and a glossy black diffuser. On the inside it gets cloth and microfiber upholstery (Vienna leather optional), Crystal Grey stitching, aluminum door sill guards, stainless steel pedal caps and footrest, leather steering wheel with R-Line logo and a black headliner.

The five-seater Tiguan will be joined late next year by a longer wheelbase seven-seat version set to be built in Mexico sold in select markets.

    Yes yes yes.

A lot of enthusiasts are finally praising vw that they gave the Tiguan round wheel arches. I personally liked the more squared off ones.

I like how it looks like a miniaturized Touareg and has that illusion of higher class from it.

Looks much more expensive than a Tiguan generally is.

If they actually go for the long wheel base version that is rumored, this would be a strong candidate for my wife's next car. The long wheelbase idea seems to be taking ideas from the Crossblue concept, with a 6 or 7 seat option. Will be keeping an eye on this guy for sure.

I really like the white one. The interior isn't all that impressive though.

Yup that's going to be a great seller. Keep in mind the NA one will probably be slightly longer as we are supposed to get the 7 seater option. Also, TDI power is rumored to still be a go!

I hope its set up with option to remove center seat of middle row for access to the back bench (Toyota Highlander does this). Crossblue concept had 2 2 2 configuration that I really liked. A 2 3 2 with no passthrough in the middle row would be 100% useless for me!!! We strap 2 rear facing seats in our middle row and have two booster seats in the back for my wife's dayhome. If we have to un-tether a car seat an fold down the middle row to get kids in the back several times a day, it would be a no-go, unfortunately!

                        Re: 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan

Aside from introducing the conventionally-powered Tiguan, Volkswagen has also revealed a plug-in hybrid concept with the now familiar GTE suffix.

The Tiguan GTE is for now only a concept that marries a 156 PS 1.4 TSI engine with an electric motor and together these two generate a combined output of 218 PS (160 kW). The electric motor has been integrated the six-speed dual-clutch gearbox's housing while the 13 kWh lithium-ion battery pack has enough juice for a maximum range of 50 km (31 miles). It can be recharged either externally, but also through the roof-mounted solar panels which under ideal conditions can provide enough energy for up to 1,000 km (621 miles) of driving range annually.

When running in hybrid mode, the Tiguan GTE needs just 1.9 liters / 100 km (124 mpg US or 148.6 mpg UK) with corresponding CO2 emissions of only 42 g/km. Once you hit the GTE button which unlocks all the power, the hybrid crossover will need 8.1 seconds to get from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) and will top out at 124 mph (200 km/h) while in electric mode it will do 81 mph (130 km/h).

There's no word just yet about a production version, but maybe we will find out more about this as the concept will premiere in a few hours at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Totally. A blue Tiggy would look great. Also interesting to see the transition from almost every manufacturer to some sort of e-power.

A high-profile Volkswagen manager has shed some light on the company's plans regarding the Tiguan SUV.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan is set to arrive at dealerships this spring and AutoExpress is reporting the German manufacturer is already planning to expand the vehicle’s lineup, adding “a whole family” of models with the same name. Speaking to the magazine at the winter driving launch of the Tiguan, VW compact cars boss Jochen Bohle said that “we have plans for a whole Tiguan family over the next two to three years.” He confirmed all new Tiguan-based models will wear the same moniker as “it is almost like a brand in itself.”

The move will start with a bigger seven-seat version of the Tiguan, featuring a 4.33-inch (11-cm) longer wheelbase and a bigger rear overhang. This transformation will provide room for a third row of seats. Thanks to the versatile MQB platform, the Tiguan XL (name not confirmed) will also gain a wider track.

Also in the cards is a stylish coupe version that will rival the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and the upcoming Mazda Koeru-based coupe-SUV. “It is a very exciting car, the coupe,” Bohle said, also adding that “it’s looking fantastic.” It will use the same wheelbase like the standard model, but will feature sloped roofline and redesigned rear end. The model will be “global” and will likely be produced in Wolfsburg.
