Volkswagen of America has announced plans to offer a new turbocharged 1.4-liter TSI four-cylinder engine in the Jetta.

Designed to replace the turbocharged 1.8-liter and naturally-aspired 2.0-liter engines, the new 1.4-liter engine comes from the EA211 family and features direct injection as well as aluminum construction.

The engine produces 150 bhp and 184 lb-ft of torque. It can be paired to either a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. With the latter gearbox, Volkswagen expects the model to return 39 mpg highway - a 13 percent improvement over the previous 2.0-liter unit and a 7 percent improvement over the 1.8-liter engine.

In a statement, Volkswagen of America's Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy said “We are delighted that so many Volkswagen customers are now able to benefit from the performance and fuel-efficiency of our turbocharged and direct-injection engines, whether they choose TDI or TSI technology. Volkswagen leads the industry with implementation of these engines in North America and we are excited that we are furthering our leadership with the introduction of the latest-generation EA211 engine in the Jetta.”

they might replace the low output 160hp 1.8tsi with the 1.4tsi, and keep the 180hp 1.8tsi if they even have one in NA

The new 1.4T has more power and better fuel efficiency than either of the 1.8T or 2.0. I thought it was supposed to be an engine option in the MK7 from the start?

                From VW America Press release:

The Jetta receives a new 1.4-liter turbocharged, direct-injection engine to replace the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine in the S model and the 1.8T in the SE. This engine makes 150 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, as well as improving manufacturer estimated highway fuel economy by more than 15 percent over the outgoing 2.0-liter engine. Fitment of this engine to the Jetta brings Volkswagen’s percentage of vehicles equipped with turbocharged, direct-injection engines up to about 97 percent, reinforcing the company’s leadership in this technology.

It looks like the 1.8T is staying in some cars but not in the Jetta.
